PAIR OF SELMER, FULL MAZZEO, CENTERED TONE CLARINETS-SOLD

£5995

Clarinets Direct is pleased to be able to offer another extremely rare pair of clarinets for sale. These instruments have a fine provenance: They were originally owned by Edward [Ted] Planas, who was a renowned clarinettist, designer, and acoustician, as well as a Selmer agent for many years here in the UK. After Ted's death they were bought by a collector who is now selling off part of his collection.

These instruments demonstrate the most complete and full Mazzeo system that we have ever encountered. For those unfamiliar with the Mazzeo system the mechanism facilitates the production of a good throat Bb by using additional key work to open the third trill key in conjunction with throat A. Thus an excellent throat Bb can be produced by touching any of the rings from LH 2 down, with the throat A key. This system can be disconnected at will by sliding down a cylinder placed on top of the third trill key. In addition to all the usual Full Boehm refinements this pair offer the following: 1. There is a low E/F#, B/C# articulated trill mechanism. 2. An extra LH low Eb/Bb lever. 3. An additional linkage to the first sliver key on the lower joint, and the low Ab/Eb key, which allows for trilling E to Eb/B to Bb. 4. Finally a unique cogged wheel attachment to the throat A key [only on the A clarinet] which is, we imagine, to facilitate a throat Ab/Bb trill i.e. as called for in the 1st Mvt of the Mozart Quintet. This can be extended or disconnected at will by pulling on the cogged wheel.
The Bb has matching serial nos. throughout of Q7509. This is unique with Selmer in our experience, in that the serial nos. are stamped on all the pieces of the clarinet. All wood is in pristine condition, as is German Silver key work. The instrument was last serviced on 26th June 2014, all pads and corks are in very good condition.
The A has again matching serial nos. on all pieces, Q7627, excepting the barrel, this dates the pair to 1957. Like the Bb the wood is pristine throughout, as is the key work. All fish skin pads, whilst not new, will be good for many months to come. The original case is also in very good condition. This pair is probably one of the finest and most advanced Mazzeo pairs in existence, both instruments play with a warm tone and excellent intonation.

MATCHED PAIR OF LEBLANC OPUS CLARINETS-SOLD

£3795

This very fine pair of instruments are a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. Their former owner is a professional player based in the South West. He has taken excellent care of these instruments, and has had Andrew Roberts fully overhaul them, as well as modify the register key touchpieces. Andrew was an enthusiastic endorser of the Leblanc range as introduced in the 2000s. The Opus was the model at the top of this range. Leblanc offered this clarinet as an improvement over the Buffet R13 Prestige, with a higher placement of the speaker key tube for improved stability of intonation. Leblanc engineering has always been of a high standard and these clarinets feature integral raised and tapered tone holes; Inverted taper bore barrels of the Moennig pattern; 18 keys, i.e. LH Ab/Eb, and unstained hand selected Grenadilla wood.
There is no damage to the wood, which is crack and repair free. The Bb and A are truly special and matched in that they share the exact same serial nos. 66610! The Silver plating overall is very good, with only tiny amounts of wear. The pads are all in excellent condition, as is the regulation, and all touch and tenon corks. Both clarinets have Ton Kooiman adjustable thumb rests fitted. All pieces are original and stamped Leblanc, with 2 interchangeable barrels [ the bores of the Bb and A are identical] of 65.7mm and 65.0mm. The mouthpiece is an "as new" D'Addario, X10E. The case is a BAM, in excellent condition.

The Nickel plate throughout is in fine condition, with no discernable wear. This instrument was made with Leblanc's usual excellence, and features gold plated springs to resist corrosion. We have just fully overhauled the instrument in double bladder fish skin pads, and the clarinet is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The bore, in common with all other Leblanc made C clarinets, is 14.50mm. The instrument tunes exceptionally well with the supplied Vandoren 5RV mouthpiece. £995

An excellent condition Buffet E11 C clarinet, in Grenadilla wood. This clarinet has just been through our workshop for a re-pad, in fish skin pads, and is sold with our full 1 year warranty. Current Buffet E13's and E11's are giving a lot of trouble with shrinkage and wood movement, these problems commenced when Buffet moved the manufacture of these models from Germany back to the old Leblanc factory in France. Fortunately this instrument pre-dates this; it was made in Germany.

PAIR OF NOBLET, by LEBLANC, PLATEAU CLARINETS-SOLD

£2595

A rare, excellent condition pair of Noblet, Paris France, Plateau clarinets. These are entry level professional model Noblets, with a covered hole mechanism, i.e. plateau. The instruments have had one careful elderly owner, who bought them from new to help with fingering health issues.
The instruments are not exactly a matched pair: The Bb is a model 45, formerly known as the "Artist", this clarinet is made entirely from Grenadilla wood. It has adjusting screws for the correspondence and also the ring finger touchpieces on the lower joint. All the key work, which is plated in Silver, is in very good condition, with no wear to the touchpieces, only very slight marks natural to normal use. The Grenadilla wood throughout is in excellent condition. The clarinet has fine condition fish skin pads throughout, it has just been through our workshop for a thorough "check down" with pads replaced as necessary. The matching serial nos. are D65108, which make this clarinet a very late example.
The A is an "Artist" model again this clarinet is made from Grenadilla wood, apart from the barrel, which is made of resin. All the key work, which is plated in Nickel Silver, is in very good condition, with no wear to the touchpieces, only very slight marks natural to normal use. The Grenadilla wood throughout is in excellent condition, with no cracks or damage. Like the Bb clarinet it has fine condition fish skin pads throughout and has just been through our workshop for a thorough "check down" with pads replaced as necessary. The matching serial nos. are B16718. There are 2 original Noblet m'pieces supplied. The case is a brand new "Bags" with over the shoulder carry strap. These clarinets continued to be manufactured by Leblanc right up until they ceased manufacture in 2009. It was described by them as "specifically designed for the younger player, doubler or even the arthritic player who may have difficulty covering the standard open-tone-hole". If desied the pair can be split as follows: Bb in new single case with m'piece, £1295. A in double case with m'piece, £1345.00

PAIR OF YAMAHA, CSG III CUSTOM, CLARINETS-SOLD

£4745

A mint condition pair of Yamaha CSG CUSTOM III clarinets, which are a commission sale. Clarinets Direct is fortunate to count a great many of the UK's top professional clarinettists as our customers: One such is Nicholas Carpenter, for many years Principal Clarinet of the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, and member of the LPO. Nick's recording of the Mozart Clarinet Quintet was chosen as the recommended recording by BBCR3 CD review. He chose this pair from many examples from Yamaha in 2012, and used them in the LPO, until he left in 2013. Yamaha made great claims for the CSG range; a new bore design is supposed to provide great tonal richness, as found in older instruments made from properly aged Grenadilla. Certainly the final incarnation of the CSG, the CSG III, has been a great success with many players.
The instruments are pristine, "as new", with perfect condition "Hamilton" key work. The wood is finest unstained Grenadilla, in mint condition, no cracks or damage. The Bb has matching serial nos. 01042. The bore design features a reverse taper to the barrel. Unlike Buffet polycylindrical bore designs, the instrument features a taper also at the top of the upper joint. The bore at the middle of the instrument, however, is similar to the Buffet Bb R13/RC. Consequently the intonation and evenness of this instrument do feel like an improvement over Buffet standard designs. The pads are white leather, in "as new" condition with lower trill keys and register key in cork. The clarinet comes with 2 original barrels, a standard of 56mm and a short of 55mm. The A has matching serial nos. 01014. Unlike the Bb this A comes with the corrective key, operated by the RH thumb, to raise the pitch on low E & F. Nick felt that the A needed this additional vent key, but that the intonation of the Bb on the lowest pitches was fine, so consequently he chose a Bb without this key. Again the pads are white leather, in "as new" condition with lower trill keys and register key in cork. The clarinet comes with 2 original barrels, a standard of 56mm and a short of 54mm. Again, in common with Buffet pairs, the A is of slightly larger bore than the Bb. The double case and part leather cover are also like new.

686

AMATI KRASLICE, 261 Eb CLARINET-SOLD

£645

This is an Amati 261 Eb Clarinet, in very good condition, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. This instrument was made in the Czech Republic and features a Grenadilla wood body and barrel, with a wood effect resin bell. For an intermediate wooden Eb clarinet it has a very good specification, with Silver plated keys and finest white leather pads throughout, which are all in very good condition. The tuning is excellent with standard French bore mouthpieces, in this regard the instrument is a major advance on older Amati instruments. The Silver plate is pristine throughout. The matching serial nos. are 231133. The supplied original m'piece is an Amati No. 6 in "as new" condition. The case is the original in good condition. This clarinet would suit a player looking for a bargain priced wooden Eb for occasional use, or a young beginner, with smaller hands, not quite ready for a standard Bb.

MATCHED PAIR OF BOOSEY AND HAWKES SYMPHONY 1010 CLARINETS-SOLD

£1645

A fine pair of B&H Symphony 1010 clarinets which were selected from the Edgware factory new in 1969 by the late Gervase de Peyer for their original purchaser. They have only ever had one professional owner, and have been very well cared for.
The instruments have tan leather pads throughout, which are a mixture of new and old. All are sealing well and will be good for sometime to come. The Bb, matching serial nos. 318256, has no wear to the Silver plate, but there is some slight darkening and tarnish commensurate with the age of the clarinet. There is no damage to the wood, which is in fine order throughout. The A, matching serial nos. 318245, has Silver plate in fine order, and again no cracks or damage to the wood. All pieces are matching and original. There are 2 barrels of 64.5mm and 62.5mm. The supplied m'pieces are a B&H 1010 No. 2, which is in fair used condition, with some discolouration to the ebonite, and a well used Peter Eaton 1010 m'piece. The case is a BAM original, which is in good condition.

688

PAIR OF BUFFET CRAMPON RC CLARINETS-SOLD

£3095

An extremely fine pair of Buffet RC clarinets in Silver plate, which are a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. The Buffet RC model was launched in 1975, and named after Robert Carree, who had had a long career with Buffet Crampon, which culminated in him being chief designer. The RC places the speaker tube higher, and features a slighter wider initial polycylindrical bore than the R13. Most players find this results in a warmer, more "spread" tone, than the R13. This pair date to 1978, commonly referred to as "The Golden Era" of Buffet manufacture. Certainly when one looks at the pristine quality of the Silver plate, and excellent quality of this pair one is left wondering why the contemporary standards of Buffet manufacture have fallen off so badly. Part of the reason for this could be that at this point in time the RC was the top of the range model made by Buffet, and sold at a 20% price premium over the R13.
The Bb has matching S/N F186195, it has just been completely overhauled by Clarinets Direct and is sold with our full 1 year warranty. There is no damage to the wood, which is crack and repair free. All pieces are matching and original and stamped "Buffet". The plating overall is excellent with no discernible wear. The A has matching S/N 181519, again it has just been completely overhauled by ourselves and the condition is pristine. The 150th Anniversary Buffet double case also dates to the 1970s and is in good used condition. If desired the pair can be split as follows: RC A in double case for £1600. RC Bb in new single case with Buffet m'piece for £1500.

689

BUFFET RC A CLARINET-SOLD

£1495

A near mint condition Buffet RC A clarinet, which has come to Clarinets Direct as a commission sale from well known repairer, David Kyle. When the American investor Martin Tolchin bought Buffet Crampon in the mid 1970's he felt that though the R13 sold well in the USA, different models would be more successful in Europe. The S1, Continentale and BC20, which became the RC, were all attempts to make darker, more focused sounding clarinets. The RC did sell very well: It has a more relaxed warm tone than the R13, which attracts many UK players.
This A has matching S/N 324466, which dates to 1989. The instrument is "as new" with only wear to the logo stamp on the bell to stop it as being described as in mint condition. The Grenadilla wood throughout is in perfect condition without any marks or blemish. The Silver plate is pristine. This instrument has just had a full re-pad in double bladder fish skin pads, with all touch corks replaced, and tenon corks as necessary. The supplied barrel is an upgrade to a Prestige of 64.5mm. The case is again "as new" and is an upgrade to a Prestige model with combination locks. The mouthpiece is a brand new stock Buffet.

690

LEBLANC, CONCERTO, Bb CLARINET, CHARLES COLLECTION-SOLD

£1195

An excellent condition Leblanc Concerto Bb clarinet. This instrument has been professionally owned and played by a well known London Jazz player. Unfortunately this player now faces a large inheritance tax bill, and a large part of his excellent selection of clarinets, and saxophones, must be sold.
The Concerto is one of the last of Leblanc's top professional wooden model clarinets, it features the same polycylindrical bore design, of 14.61mm, as the Opus. It was made with all of Leblanc's usual engineering excellence; with gold plated needle springs, separate pillar mounted Ab/Eb, and aged Grenadilla wood. This example has no damage or repairs to the wood, which is in excellent condition. The Silver plate key work is near pristine, with only a slight patch of wear to the register key. All pieces are original & all have matching stamps. The fish skin pads are not new, however, they are all sealing perfectly. There are 2 supplied barrels, of 66mm and 67mm. The matching serial nos. are 77457. The supplied m'piece is a Leblanc K10M. The case is the original, in good condition.

691

CABART, THIBOUVILLE, Bb CLARINET-SOLD

£595

This is a professional Bb clarinet made by Cabart, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. From 1893 Thibouville Cabart were amongst the finest French producers of artist quality clarinets. They were still active after WW II though, according to Langwill, the stamp seems to have been used by another French dealer/maker.
This example dates from the late 1940's, or possibly 1950's, and is in mint condition. The Maillechort [ German Silver] key work is in pristine order throughout. All of the fish skin pads are sealing well, and all corks are also good. All receiving tenons are metal lined, and all other tenons are metal ringed, in other words this instrument was manufactured as a top professional model of the finest quality. The Grenadilla wood is very fine. The bore is 14.9mm, remarkably close to a Selmer of the period. The case is an Evette Schaeffer of the 1950's which is, again, in excellent condition.

692

BUFFET R13 Bb CLARINET-SOLD

£1245

A Buffet R13 Bb clarinet, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. This instrument is in good condition, and has had a professional UK owner, who unfortunately is forced to sell a number of his instruments due to an inheritance tax bill.
This clarinet has just been overhauled, in fish skin pads, in our workshop, and is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The Bb has matching serial nos. 227247, which dates to 1982, this was just prior to the Boosey and Hawkes take over of Buffet, and also prior to the introduction of the Prestige range. R13s from this particular period are deservedly sought after, as they were made to a much higher standard than the contemporary R13. All pieces are matching and original, and stamped "Buffet". The Nickel Silver plating shows some wear, mainly to the ring fingers. There are no cracks or repairs to the Grenadilla wood which is in excellent condition. The m'piece is a used Selmer C* in good used condition. The supplied Buffet case comes with a leather case cover and is in very good condition.

693

THE A IS SOLD. THE Bb IS RESERVED. These are an excellent condition pair of Leblanc LX clarinets. The clarinets feature a modern polycylindrical bore design of 14.60mm and respond and tune excellently. The model was Leblanc's flagship design of the 1980s & was so successful that it continued in production right up until 2009 when the French factory was sold to Buffet Crampon. [The model was re-badged LX 2000 in 2000.] The instruments have just been completely re-padded in fish skin pads in the Clarinets Direct workshop and are sold with our full 1 year warranty. The m'piece is an up-grade to a profesional Buffet B, in ebonite. Current E13s are being treated by Buffet with a chemical compound, which is supposed to inhibit cracking. In fact this seems to be causing some joint problems for Buffet, with many new instrument owners reporting problems with sticking joints to dealers, due to this compound leaching out from the wood end grain. At the period this instrument was made, thankfully the Grenadilla wood was left to age naturally prior to manufacture.

£795

This Bb B&H 1010 clarinet is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. It has most recently been owned by an amateur player but formerly it belonged to Tony Lamb, ex-Principal Clarinet of English National Opera. All of Tony's clarinets are carefully selected and often undergo further expensive after market improvements by Jon Steward ex-T. W. Howarth & Co. Typically this involve correcting intonation faults and improving the evenness of the scale. This Bb, with matching serial nos. 469716, has wood throughout in very good condition, apart from the bell rim, which shows some scuffs and dings. All tan leather pads are "as new", as are the touch and tenon corks. The Silver plate shows some slight wear mainly to the ring fingers, and the throat G#, A & register keys. This example has no damage or repairs to the wood, which is in excellent condition, though the thumb rest has been moved higher, and the old screw holes left unfilled. GEORGE LEBLANC, PARIS, LL BASS CLARINET-SOLD

£1895

This is an extremely rare top of the range G Leblanc, Paris, LL Bass Clarinet in Grenadilla wood, to low Eb, some designate this the model 500. This Bass features a fork Ab/Eb, i.e. you raise the middle finger in the RH to play Ab/Eb, which neatly does away with the necessity for another touchpiece for the LH little finger. Although Leblanc's instruments were almost entirely handmade, Leon Leblanc insisted that the craftsmen follow careful measurements. "Music is an art, but it is still governed by the laws of science," he declared (Music Trades, July 1996). As a result, Leblanc instruments were more consistent than those that had come before. The LL models, named for Leon Leblanc, demonstrate excellent evenness and intonation throughout the entire range. This is a UK professional owner instrument, and is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct.
The Grenadilla wood throughout is in superb condition, with no cracks or damage, only slight scuffs associated with normal use. The Nickel Silver key work is in very good condition throughout, with no wear. The crook is in excellent condition, as is the bell, which has a floor peg attachment. The instrument has Tan Leather pads throughout, which are like new. The matching serial nos. are 7778, which probably dates to the early 1970's. The m'piece is an "as new" Noblet. There is no joint wobble, and the Bass is well regulated. The original case is also in excellent condition.

BUFFET CRAMPON BC20 Bb CLARINET-SOLD

£1245

When the American investor Martin Tolchin bought Buffet Crampon company he felt that though the R13 sold well in the USA different models would be more successful in Europe. The S1, Continentale and BC20, which evolved into the RC, were all attempts to make darker, more focused sounding clarinets. The great French player, Jacques Lancelot was particularly associated with the development of the BC20 model.
This is a BC 20 Bb clarinet serial no. F121199 dating to 1971, which is a commonly referred to as "The Golden Era" of Buffet manufacture. This clarinet is an "enhanced Boehm" featuring L/H fork Eb/Bb and a LH Ab/Eb lever, this last key would be found on todays Prestige models. Buffet Crampon descibed this clarinet as being designed for Recital and Orchestral playing. The key work is in Silver plate, which is in very good condition, apart from slight wear to the L/H index ring finger. The wood is excellent throughout with no cracks, damage or repairs. The key regulation is tight and there is no joint wobble. The instrument has just had a complete re-pad in Pisoni deluxe fish skin pads by Clarinets Direct, and is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The m'piece is a Selmer C85 115 in ebonite in used condition. There are 2 supplied barrels, an original Buffet and a shorter one which is not a Buffet. The case is a used Buffet, again in good condition.

YAMAHA SE-V CUSTOM Bb CLARINET -SOLD

£1495

A Yamaha SE-V CUSTOM clarinet, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. This instrument has been professionally owned by a UK player, and is in very fine condition. It is received wisdom within the music industry that when Yamaha launch a new product, they will have made every conceivable effort to outdo their competitors, at a considerably cheaper price to the customer. So it was in the mid 1990's, when Yamaha began manufacture of the Custom CS-V and SE range. The SE-V, which was Yamaha's most expensive clarinet, features different tapers to the bore, both top and bottom, and the SE has slightly wider tonehole sizes, than the CS, resulting in a warmer, rounder sound and an abundance of overtones. It also features a "scalloped" resonance chamber inside the bell to improve both projection and tuning of the lowest pitches. In other words; this model was Yamaha's direct competitor to the RC Prestige, where as the CS, competed with the R13 Prestige. Indeed the SE-V was such a succesful design for Yamaha that it has now been re-released as the SE-Artist, with an eye watering price of close on £6000.
The instrument has no cracks or damage to the wood, which is Grenadilla. This Bb has matching S/N 03039 We have just entirely re-padded in Pisoni finest double bladder fish skin pads, and the instrument is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The Silver plated key work is in good order throughout with no discernable wear. The supplied m'pieces is a used Vandoren M30. The case is a used Protech. This instrument represents superb value for money: For about the cost of a new student Buffet E13, one can purchase a top of the range professional instrument more consistent than most Buffet Prestige Bbs.

A LEFEVRES, PARIS, PLATEAU Bb CLARINET-SOLD

£995

An extremely fine, and rare, A Lefevres, Paris, covered hole clarinet. Albert Lefevres was apparently active in La Couture near Paris from the 1930s, and given the "Mother of Pearl" touchpieces and design of keywork this would seem to be an instrument from this period.
There is no damage to the main pieces, which are all original, crack and repair free. The condition of the wood is very good, with only minor marks and scuffs associated with normal use. The original German Silver key work is in lovely condition, without any wear, again only light scratches. The fish skin pads, whilst not new, are all in very good condition, and will be serviceable for many months to come. The Buffet case is in good condition, as is the supplied mouthpiece, which is a used Selmer C85 115. The instrument tunes extremely well at A=440 Hz, and is excellent value for a "plateau" wooden clarinet. It does not exhibit any of the "stuffiness" sometimes found in cheaper covered hole clarinet designs. It would suit a sax/flute doubler or a player suffering from arthritis.

PAIR OF BUFFET VINTAGE CLARINETS-SOLD

£1395

A rare pair of early Buffet clarinets. This pair have been professionally owned and played in period instrument orchestras here in the UK. These instruments have a larger bore of 15.0 mm, and larger tone holes than the contemporary Buffet's. The result is a free and easy playing pair, with excellent intonation, and none of the third register problems inherent in the polycylindrical design. The drawbacks are flatter notes on low E and F, but to some extent this is corrected by the fact that, at this period, Buffet reamed the neck of the bell, continuing the flare of the lower joint: this does result in exceptionally even response across into the second register, a pity this is no longer standard practise. This pair also feature wrap around speaker keys.
The Bb has serial number 491L1 dating to 1918. It is in good condition for its age, with no cracks to the main body pieces. However the bell has a repaired, glued crack, and also there is a tight hairline crack to the original barrel, which measures 67mm. However the last professional owner of the pair preferred to play the Bb with an Evette & Schaeffer Buffet barrel, of 63.5mm. The pads areused fish skin but sealing well, the instrument has been through our workshop for a thorough "check down". The stamps on the Bb bell read "Buffet Crampon a Paris, C Fischer New York". The clarinet was therefore originally supplied to the USA, where Carl Fischer were an authorised Buffet distributor.
A, S/N X [6]271, probably dates to 1906. The digit "6" seems to have been stamped later, as it of a different font type. The clarinet is in good condition throughout, though there is a repaired glued, and pinned, surface crack to the upper joint, which runs down to the first pillar for the speaker key, it does not enter the bore, which is in excellent condition. Like the Bb, the bell also has a repaired, glued crack. The instrument has German silver keywork, which like the Bb, shows a patina commensurate with its age. Again it has used fish skin pads which are all sealing well. Like the Bb, the A comes with 2 barrels, of 64.5mm and 61.6mm. The longer of the two has had the m'piece tenon sleeved in metal. A custom ebonite m'piece is included which was re-layed to 1.1mm by 17mm by the late Prof. John Playfair; it tunes the pair very well. The supplied case is of modern light weight type with carry straps and many pouches. These instruments would make an excellent addition to a period players inventory, or possibly, might delight a collector of rare, historic clarinets.

FRANK HAMMERSCHMIDT Bb CLARINET-SOLD

£1745

Clarinets Direct is delighted to be able to offer this extremely rare custom made, Frank Hammerschmidt, Burgau, Boehm system clarinet for sale. This instrument has had only one former owner, an amateur, and he has taken exceptionally good care of this clarinet. Frank Hammerschmidt has one of the most enviable reputations Worldwide of clarinet makers: His clarinets manage to achieve a rare synthesis of German/Viennese dark tone with Boehm system fingering. They are amongst the most expensive and sought after clarinets.
The Bb features a bore size of 15.15mm, silver plated keys, with offset C#/G# hole, and adjusting screws for lower pad regulation. The pads are white leather in good condition. There is no wear to the Silver plate, which is pristine throughout. The wood is without marks or damage. There are 2 barrels of 61.5mm & 63.0mm. Also supplied are two mouthpieces, one a Frank Hammerschmidt "3F", the other a Noblet 3. The original case is also in excellent condition, and comes with the keys. The intonation and response are impeccable. The instrument will also play with most standard French bore m'pieces.

MATCHED PAIR OF HERBERT WURLITZER, SCHMIDT REFORM BOEHM CLARINETS-SOLD

£5745

Clarinets Direct is Europe's leading specialist clarinet dealer. We are fortunate indeed to be able to offer these rare and fine Herbert Wurlitzer Schmidt Reform Boehm system clarinets. These instruments have come to us from the family of the late Jonathan Rutland, a well respected player, and teacher, and author of Abracadabra Clarinet. For many players these clarinets are the ultimate Boehm system: In tune, made with consumate craftsmanship and offering a uniquely characterful tone, which contrasts sharply with some modern mass produced instruments.
Herbert Wurlitzer, son of Fritz, adapted his fathers' design in several ways. The position of the tone hole underneath 1st line E/B was moved in order to correct the inherent sharpness of upper B/C at the top of the clarion. Dedicated tone holes for both throat G# and A, lean more towards the German concept of purity of tone. The throat Bb booster key mechanism is redesigned, as is the LH sliver key. Unlike his fathers' clarinets there is no vent for the middle finger B/F# twelfth. Though many modern manufacturers claim to make a Schmidt Reform Boehm, these clarinets are the genuine and superb article.
These clarinets feature: A booster mechanism for throat Bb. An additional vent for the D/A twelfth, working off the LH 3rd ring. A compensating low G/D pad. A hole in the bell to improve low E/B. All of this results in a clarinet of superb evenness and unmatched security of intonation. Indeed the problem confronting the player used to the inherent shortcomings of the standard Boehm, is learning not to adjust embouchure pressure to correct the non existent faults on this instrument! This early Herbert Wurlitzer instrument features a small bore of 14.60mm, and the instruments play very well with modern French bore m'pieces aspecially standard Vandorens. This is one of the main differences between Herbert's design and Fritz's; essentially these instruments work readily with standard m'pieces.
The Bb has matching serial nos. 27081, which dates to February 1970, and has Silver plate in excellent condition throughout. The wood is in very good condition, however there is one old surface crack to the upper joint, which does not enter the bore or a tone hole, it has been stable for over 45 years. The repair is excellent, I have attempted to photograph it, see photo 12, but, even with the naked eye it is extremely dificult to see. The instrument has just been completely overhauled in tan leather in our workshop, and it is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The instrument is stamped " Herbert Wurlitzer, Neustadt Aisch".
The A has serial no. 27082 and has Silver plate in very good condition throughout. The wood is in excellent condition. Again the instrument has just been overhauled in tan leather in our workshop, and it is sold with our full 1 year warranty. There are 3 barrels, 2 for the Bb of 55.5mm and 56mm, and 1 for the A of 57mm. The m'pieces are an original H Wurlitzer, which is much used, and Buffet in ebonite, which has been bored out to B&H 926 dimensions. The supplied case original, and has seen much use: The interior is worn, and the handle has been replaced with a strap.

SELMER, PARIS, 10G Bb CLARINET-RESERVED

£1295

THE A IS "SOLD". THE Bb STILL FOR SALE IN NEW SINGLE CASE WITH C85 120 M'PIECE FOR £1295. An extremely fine matched pair of Selmer 10G clarinets, which are a commission sale for Clarinets Direct, having come to us via a UK amateur player. The Selmer 10G was named for Anthony Gigliotti, onetime principal Clarinet of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Gigliotti had become frustrated with certain shortcomings in the R13 design and went to Buffet Crampon with modifications, Buffet weren't impressed, but Selmer were. The result was the 10G: an improved, "Americanised "R13, with warmer sound and better intonation. Hans W Moennig and Ralph Morgan were also major contributors to the design. In his book "Clarinet Acoustics" O. Lee Gibson, stated that in comparisons with all other major clarinet manufacturers designs, the 10G was consistently the most in tune.
The Bb, S/N D3861, has wood and Silver plate in good condition. There are no cracks or repairs, the wood is in fine condition throughout. The pads, which are tan leather, are also in good condition. The instrument has gone through our workshop, with any tenon and touch corks replaced as necessary. The A S/N C4825, is in excellent order throughout with wood showing no cracks or damage. Again all the tan leather pads are in excellent condition. The Orly double case is in good condition , the m'piece is a used Selmer C85 120. These are late 10Gs,featuring an adjustable thumb rest and replacing the "crows foot" with a screw regulated arm, in the manner of a B&H 1010. In the past many famous 1010 players initially made the change to French instruments via the 10G, which has a particularly warm tone, possibly foremost amongst these was the late Dame Thea King, Thurston's widow.

MATCHED PAIR OF BOOSEY AND HAWKES SYMPHONY 1010 CLARINETS-SOLD

£1795

An extremely rare pair of "enhanced Boehm" B&H 1010's which were a special order from the factory and are a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. These instruments area one owner pair, and the original purchaser initially ordered a Bb from Boosey & Hawkes on the occasion of his first professional employment. A couple of years later, having saved up, he was able to then complete the pair with an A from B&H. The pair play with a "classic" early 1010 sound with lots of character and projection in the tone. Despite pre-dating the Acton patent vent, the tuning throughout is good.
The instruments have just been down to our workshop for a thourough check up, with pads, touch and tenon corks replaced as necessary. The Bb, serial no. 257141, has no cracks or repairs to the wood though the original screw holes for the thumb rest have been filled, which has been re-positioned higher. The Silver plate throughout is in very good condition. All pads are used tan leather in excellent condition, the pair have been very well cared for. The A, serial no. 288926, has no cracks or repairs, though, like the Bb amore modern adjustable thumb rest has been moved higher, and the screw holes left unfilled. The original thumb rests are also included in the sale. The Silver plate throughout is in excellent shape. The A has had significantly less use than the Bb. There are 2 barrels of 64.5mm and 62.5mm. The supplied m'piece is a Vandoren B40, bored out to 1010 dimensions, which is, again, in good used condition. The original case is in good condition.

E J ALBERT, BASS CLARINET TO LOW Eb-SOLD

£1495

This is a very rare E J Albert, Bruxelles, Bass Clarinet in Grenadilla wood, to low Eb, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. The last former owner is a UK based professional. Albert were considered one of the finest manufacturers of clarinets pre WW 2,and E J Albert was noted for the forward nature of his thinking, especially with key work design. This Bass is typical of that flair for innovation. It features a fully automatic double overblowing vent, with the throat Bb hole used as the initial vent for the second register, and the upper vent being on the crook. As with modern Bass clarinets the upper vent opens for the pitches from E upwards in the clarion register. This instrument was built at a time when many Bass clarinets had 2 separate speaker key touchpieces and only a range to low E. In this way the Albert is prefigures the sort of design Selmer were to adopt post WW 2.
The Silver plated key work is in good condition, with only minor wear, the plating shows some "brassing" commensurate with the age of this instrument. The key work throughout shows a robust solidity, and is of fine manufacture. The Grenadilla wood shows minor surface scratches and marks, and the lowest section of the bottom joint has been replaced or repaired in the past. It is possible that this is in fact a later extension, to enable the low Eb, though the key work all appears original, so this is unlikely, see photo 9. This Bass was last overhauled by Alan Andrews in tan leather and all pads are in excellent condition, the Bass is also well regulated. There is a modern floor peg attachment to the bell, as well as a rear sling hook. The case is a modern replacement for a single piece Bass, in fair used condition, there are some scuffs to the exterior and wear to the interior. The m'piece is a used Selmer C, which has been relayed by Alan Andrews. .

The pair play with a "classic" early 1010 sound with lots of character and projection in the tone. Despite pre-dating the Acton patent vent the tuning throughout is good. These instruments were professionally owned and played in The BBC Concert Orchestra by "Mick" Martin, who was second clarinet to both Michael Meyerowitz and Michael Pearce: The pair have seen much use.

SELMER, PARIS, PROFESSIONAL BASS TO LOW C-SOLD

£4495

This is a very good condition Selmer Bass Clarinet in Grenadilla wood, to low C. The professional owner of this Bass had it extended, by means of a detachable third joint, to low C. Thus the instrument is similar to the type known as the Mark I Selmer, to low C, or the original type 33. There are 3 touchpieces on the rear underneath the RH thumb to lay low D, Db, and C. Thus the instrument can be assembled, with the extension, to play down to low C, or, as originally made, to play only down to low Eb. It has been maintained very carefully. The Nickel plate keywork throughout is in excellent order, without only slight wear to a couple of the ring finger touchpieces. There is one old, repaired crack, which ocurred when the marching band lyre attachment was removed. The crack fortunately runs through one of the screw holes for the marching band lyre, it is a surface crack and nowhere near a tone hole, it does not enter the bore and has no effect on the response. The crack has been glued and pinned, and it has been stable for over 50 years, and this with regular professional use. The matching serial nos. are V7194. All pads are brand new finest Pisoni tan leather, the instrument has just had a complete overhaul in our workshop, and is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The key regulation throughout is also precise and even. The case an original Selmer, in fair condition, there is some wear to the interior and scuffs to the exterior. It still latches well. The m'piece is a David Hite in good used condition. This Bass plays very well, even throughout the entire range, with fine response in the upper register. It would make an excellent instrument for a professional on a budget or enthusiastic amateur.

£1075

An extremely fine Selmer 10G clarinet, in Silver plate. The Selmer 10G was named for Anthony Gigliotti, onetime principal Clarinet of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Gigliotti had become frustrated with certain shortcomings in the Buffet R13 design in the late 1960's and went to Buffet Crampon with modifications, Buffet weren't impressed, but Selmer were. The result was the 10G: an improved, "Americanised" R13, with warmer sound and better intonation. Hans W Moennig and Ralph Morgan were also major contributors to the design.
This Bb, S/N Y1836, dates to the late 1970's and has Silver plate in good condition. What wear there is is mainly to the pillars, rather than the keywork, though there is slight tarnish to some of the longer barrels and trill keys. This is an earlier production model. There are no cracks or damage to the wood which is in excellent order throughout. The instrument has been well maintained, with the current owner just having up-graded to a pair, on starting a performance course at University, and this instrument is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. The fish skin pads, whilst used, are all sealing well. All parts are original and stamped "10G". The case is also the original, in good used condition, complete with leather case cover. The m'piece is a used Vandoren B40, again in good condition.

NOBLET, PARIS, BY LEBLANC, PLATEAU ARTIST C CLARINET-SOLD

£1495

This is an ultra rare and unusual Noblet Artist plateau C Clarinet, made by Leblanc, In fact it is the only example of its type which we have seen. Clarinets Direct is fortunate to count many of the UK's foremost professional players amongst our clientele: This exceptional instrument has come to us fom Joe Pacewicz, currently acting Principal Clarinet of the "Royal Scottish National Orchestra" and is in excellent condition. This instrument is the professional Artist Noblet clarinet, with all parts made of finest unstained Grenadilla wood, unlike some of the cheaper models in the Noblet range. The wood has no cracks or repairs, it is in "as new" condition throughout. The instrument has just been completely overhauled, by Mike Huntriss, ex-Bass clarinettist with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, in tan leather pads. The Nickel Silver plate is also in pristine order throughout, with no wear. The upper joint has serial nos, 93638, and the lower joint, 89959. The bore, in common with all other Leblanc made C clarinets, is 14.50mm. The instrument tunes well with the supplied original Noblet mouthpiece [which is in fair used condition], though this instrument is compatible with all French bore m'pieces, which means that usually the player can use the same m'piece they play on their Bb. The case is the original, which is in good used condition. In summation, this is a C with excellent intonation, which, for a covered hole clarinet plays very freely.

LEBLANC, VITO, ALTO CLARINET TO LOW Eb-SOLD

£495

This is a fair condition Leblanc Vito Alto Clarinet model 7165 in wood effect Resonite to low Eb. The instrument is of fully plateau, i.e. covered hole, design, and has a bore of 18.0 mm. There are no cracks to the body, which is in fine condition throughout, though there is an old repair to the upper section of the lower joint, see photos 7 & 10. Though, for ease of manufacture, Leblanc Vito Bass clarinets and Alto clarinets are made in two pieces, in fact thereafter the central screw is tightened and they should be left assembled as one piece models. It could be that the repair was necessary due to someone attempting to take this Alto apart. The crook is in good condition, but the bell shows some scratching and plating loss. The key work has Nickel Silver plating, which is, on the whole, in good condition, only the rear LH thumb touchpiece shows some spot plating wear. The matching serial numbers are 1457A. The Alto has fish skin pads thoughout which are used, but all sealing well. The case is well used, but fully functional. There is a sling and the supplied m'piece is a new Jetel. This Alto plays easily and is an ideal first Alto clarinet purchase.

BOOSEY & HAWKES IMPERIAL 926 A CLARINET-SOLD

£795

This Imperial 926 A Clarinet is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. The Imperial 926 was manufactured as a professional quality instrument on a par with the Imperial Symphony 1010, but with a bore of 15.0mm, as opposed to the 15.25mm of the 1010. According to O. Lee. Gibson in his book "Clarinet Acoustics", publ. Indiana University Press, the Imperial 926 A demonstrated the best intonation of any professional model manufactured by Boosey & Hawkes, provided it was played with the supplied m'piece; a B&H 926, which is the case here.
The A, serial no. 37240, has no cracks or repairs to the main body of the wood, however there is a tight surface crack to the bell, which is a B&H 2-20 model: This does not go through to the bore. The Silver plate throughout is in good shape, with only slight wear. The instrument has just been completely overhauled in fish skin pads by Clarinets Direct, and is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The supplied m'piece is a good condition B&H 926 No. 3. £1145

A rare, good condition Noblet, Paris France, Artist Plateau B flat clarinet. This is an entry level professional model Noblet, with a covered hole mechanism, i.e. plateau.
Unlike some of the cheaper models in the range, this clarinet is made entirely from Grenadilla wood. The wood throughout is in good condition, but there is a tight surface crack to the upper joint, which runs from the LH register key pillar up to the top tenon, see photo 11. It is a surface crack only, it does not enter the bore, or run near a tone hole, nevertheless, we have filled and sealed it in our workshop. The clarinet has just been overhauled in Premium fish skin pads & the instrument is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The matching serial nos. are 91200. The used case is in good condition, with slight stains and 1 tear to the interior, it protects the instrument well. The mouthpiece is a used Vandoren B45 in good condition. An excellent condition Buffet E11 C clarinet, in Grenadilla wood. This clarinet has white leather pads throughout in very good conditon. Current Buffet E13's and E11's are giving a lot of trouble with shrinkage and wood movement, these problems commenced when Buffet moved the manufacture of these models from Germany back to the old Leblanc factory in France. £1195

A Buffet R13 Bb clarinet, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. This instrument is in good condition, and has had only one professional UK owner, who is a now a full time singer.
This clarinet has just been completely overhauled, in fish skin pads, in our workshop, and is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The Bb has matching serial nos. 170179, which dates to 1976, this was prior to the Boosey and Hawkes take over of Buffet, and also prior to the introduction of the Prestige range. R13s from this particular period are deservedly sought after, as they were made to a much higher standard than the contemporary R13. All pieces are matching and original, and stamped "Buffet" withn the exception of the additional, short barrel which measures 63.5mm. The Nickel Silver plating shows no wear, it is in excellent condition throughout. There are no cracks or repairs to the main body pieces of the clarinet, which are in excellent condition, however there is a tight hairline crack to the bell: This crack is so tight, that to attempt a repair would only have opened the crack, so our workshop have left well alone, see photo 9. It has no effect on the response. The m'piece is a brand new Roger Garret. The original Buffet case is worn in both the interior an exterior, but still latches, and protects the instrument well.

BUFFET BC20 Bb CLARINET-SOLD

£1245

When the American investor Martin Tolchin bought Buffet Crampon company he felt that though the R13 sold well in the USA different models would be more successful in Europe. The S1, Continentale and BC20, which evolved into the RC, were all attempts to make darker, more focused sounding clarinets.
This is a BC 20 Bb clarinet serial no. F261104 dating to 1984, at this period Boosey & Hawkes had only just taken over Buffet Crampon, and quality control at Buffet had not suffered the decline it was to undergo later. Buffet Crampon descibed this model as being designed for Recital and Orchestral playing. The Silver plated key work is in very good order throughout, with only slight wear to the RH ring keys. The wood is excellent throughout with no cracks, damage or repairs. The key regulation is tight and there is no joint wobble. The instrument has had a complete overhaul & re-pad with Pisoni Premium Deluxe fish skin pads , and it is sold with a full years' Clarinets Direct warranty. The m'piece is a brand new Vandoren M30. The original case is also in good condition.

SELMER, PARIS, BASS CLARINET TO LOW Eb-SOLD

£1745

This is a fair condition Selmer Paris Bass Clarinet in Grenadilla wood, to low Eb, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. The last former owner is a UK based amateur Bass clarinettist who has just bought a Buffet Bass to low C. The Selmer Paris Bass is considered the finest in the World due to its excellent ergonomics, and automatic double overblowing vent for the second register. This particular example has had several modifications in the course of an eventfull life! The Nickel Silver key work is in fair condition, with only minor wear, the plating shows some "brassing" commensurate with the age of this instrument. but at some point the LH F/C key has been replaced with an unplated touch piece, see photos 6 & 7. There are no cracks or repairs to the Grenadilla wood though it shows minor surface scratches and marks. One of the rear sling hook holders is also missing. The bell is not original, but it fits the lower tenon well, and shows no dents or other damage. The Selmer crook is normally sleeved and adjustable, but this example has a collar repair over the adjustable part of the crook. This Bass has just had a thorough "check down" in our workshop and has been regulated. The pads are used, but still serviceable, again, any that needed changing were replaced in our workshop. There is a floor peg attachment to the bell. The matching serial nos. are V4262 which dates to 1968. The case is much used, and has string repairs to the handle. The m'piece is a used Selmer B*. In summation: This Selmer Bass would suit a professional on a budget, who is not overly concerned over cosmetic issues.

SELMER, PARIS, 10S II Bb CLARINET-SOLD

£1195

THE A IS SOLD. THE Bb STILL AVAILABLE IN SINGLE CASE FOR £1195.00 An excellent condition matched pair of Selmer 10S II clarinets, which are a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. This pair have been professionally owned and played here in the UK. The Selmer 10 series was the first major model manufactured by Selmer to adopt a small bore undercut design, in the Buffet Crampon manner. The 10S II represents a major revision of the design which was undertaken in the late 1980's. Selmer seem to have tried to make the 10S II sit more easily with the later Recital clarinet: Compared to the original the instrument seems "darker toned" and plays slightly lower in pitch, i.e. aimed more at the US market. Metal middle tenons are featured on both Bb and A, at the bottem of the upper joint, with the A also having a metal sleeved receiver tenon at the top of the lower joint. The impression is one of solid, durable, build quality. Both instruments feature adjustable thumb rests.
This Bb, S/N N06750, dates to the 2000's and has Silver plate, in pristine condition throughout. There are no cracks or damage to the wood, which is in excellent condition. All pieces are original and have matching stamps. The white leather pads, which are not new, are very good throughout. The A, has matching serial nos. N09589. Like the Bb it is in pristine conditiuon throughout. Again it has white leather pads in very good condition, and excellent condition wood with no blemishes. The key work is well regulated. The case is an Orly, again in very good condition.

BUFFET CRAMPON PROFESSIONAL BASS CLARINET-SOLD

£2595

This is a superb condition Buffet Bass Clarinet in Grenadilla wood, to low Eb. This Bass has had only 2 owners from new; initially a leading London professional, and, more recently, a specialist Bass player who has just traded up to a low C model. It is an outstanding example of a low Eb Bass. It has similar specification to the current Buffet Prestige model; double overblowing vent, articulated C#/G#, and LH alternative Ab/Eb.
All German Silver key work is in excellent condition, with a fine shine. There are no cracks or damage to the wood, which is pristine. The bell and crook are both in excellent condition with no dents, just light surface scratches. The instrument has just been completely overhauled in tan leather pads in our workshop and is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The matching serial nos. are 20145 which dates to 1967. At that period, "Dallas" were the sole London agents for Buffet, and their stamp is also on the instrument. The original case shows some wear: The lining is worn, but still protects the instrument well, and the latches are secure. The m'piece is a professional J&D Hite ebonite model in good condition. A Yamaha floor peg attachment has been fitted to the bell, and a spike is provided, but the instrument has double sling hooks, so, if required, it could be played with a sling.

The look and solid feel of this key work is far superior to most contemporary Buffet manufacture. The fish skin pads have all been recently replaced, and are "as new".
