A rare, very good condition Malerne, Paris France, Full Boehm B flat clarinet.
This instrument is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. Robert Malerne, was a second rank manufacturer active
in Paris from 1932-50. Some authorities credit his company with manufacturing the Selmer Sterling
student range of instruments.
This clarinet is made entirely from Grenadilla wood, with all pieces original, matching, and stamped.
All the key work, which is Nickel Silver plate, is in excellent condition.
The instrument was obviously made to a very high standard: The upper joint ends are metal sleeved,
and the springs are gold plated to avoid corrosion.
The wood throughout is in good condition, with no cracks or repairs, excepting
a small area underneath the lower joint tenon ring which appears to have been filled in the past, see photo 12.
Luckily the tenon is metal lined at this point so the repair has absolutely no effect on the response.
Apart fom this there are only minor surface scuffs and marks, associated with normal use.
The clarinet has recently been overhauled in fish skin pads,
and all are sealing well and will be good for some time to come.
The serial numbers are 954.
The case is well used but fully serviceable.
The mouthpiece is a used stock Yamaha 4C, which tunes the clarinet very well.
