DOUBLE BOEHM Bb CLARINET |
£995 |
|
|
This is possibly the World's rarest clarinet, a Double Boehm.
It was the brain child of the great Belgian Acoustician, and clarinet designer, Charles Houvenaghel.
I had always believed that only resonite instruments were made in this system,
however this is a Grenadilla wood, quality made instrument,
which from appearances may well have been made in the Noblet or Leblanc factory, see the "in-line jump" trill keys."
With a double Boehm clarinet basically the fingering system of the LH mirrors that of the RH.
For the third register a touchpiece is provided similar to that found on Alto and Bass clarinets.
Houvenaghel believed this would make for
a much more even scale, in terms of both intonation and tone colour. Sadly this view was not shared by other manufacturers,
including his own employer: Leblanc. Doubtless this must have been a source of disappointmnent to him.
Though this clarinet is perfectly playable, it is, in my opinion, definitely for a collector!
The Bb has matching serial nos. 1025 and has Nickel Silver plate in fair condition,
with some wear throughout, the plating is about 85%.
The wood is in overall excellent condition,
with no cracks or repairs, to the main pieces,
though the barrel has cracked, and been repaired and sealed with glue.
All pads are brand new Pisoni Premium Deluxe Tan Leather.
The instrument has been completely re-padded by Clarinets Direct and is sold with our full 1 year warranty.
The m'piece is the original, in good condition.
The case shows some tears to the interior lining but still latches well.

BUFFET R13 PRESTIGE A CLARINET |
£1795 |
|
This fine Buffet R13 Prestige A clarinet is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct.
It is a one owner instrument, and was used through studying at the Royal Scottish Academy
of Music, and thereafter professionally.
The R13 has been a phenomenal success story for Buffet Crampon. After the 1983 take
over by Boosey and Hawkes, the Prestige range represented an attempt by Buffet to recapture
former high manufacturing and quality control standards. To that end the Prestige clarinet went
back to the earlier specification: Unstained, hand selected Grenadilla wood was used,
and more time was spent on hand finishing the instrument.
In addition an additional LH Eb/Ab lever for the LH was fitted,
though this could be ordered as an optional extra on standard E13's and R13's.
This A, serial no. 329197, dates to 1990.
It has no cracks or repairs. The Silver plate throughout is in good shape, with only light surface scratches.
There is only slight tarnish to one of the long rods on the lower joint.
All double bladder fish skin pads are in good condition.
The clarinet was last serviced by Mike Huntriss a couple of years ago,
since then it has had only light use. All tenon and touch corks are in good shape also.
The key regulation is very good.
There are 2 original barrels of 67.0mm,
and 65.0mm.
The case is a BAM in good condition, there are couple of minor tears to the interior,
but all the zips are still functioning well.

LEBLANC,VITO, CONTRABASS BBb CLARINET |

|
This is a Vito BBb Contrabass clarinet, model 7182, range to low Eb.
The instrument is made from Resotone plastic, with a wood effect finish.
It has a key lay out ideal for the beginning contrabass player.

The Nickel plated keywork is in very good condition throughout.
We have just overhauled the Contra, in Pisoni Premium Deluxe Tan Leather pads,
and it is sold with our full Clarinets Direct 1 year warranty.
There was a crack to the lower joint which we have filled, sealed, pinned,
and lined internally, to make sure the repair is absolutely airtight and secure, [ see photo 10].
The mouthpiece, is a Woodwind co. model as originally supplied with this Contra
. The original case is also in good used condition,
the latches are all sound, as is the interior finish,
however there are some tears to the outer case covering fabric.

MATCHED PAIR OF LEBLANC OPUS CLARINETS
|
£2295 |
|
|
This very fine pair of instruments are a commission sale for Clarinets Direct.
Their former owner, is one of Britain's leading young players, a winner of the Royal Overseas League competition.
This pair have been played professionally in some of the UK's premiere orchestras i.e. The Philharmonia, and London Sinfonietta.
There is no damage to the wood, which is crack and repair free.
The plating overall is good but there has been some slight loss to the plating mainly on the Bb, S/N 73439 which has seen more use:
The E/B, LH 2nd ring & RH 1st ring are slightly affected.
Both instruments have had a full check up in our workshop prior to sale.
All pads are Pisoni Premium Deluxe leather and the instruments were recently overhauled.
The, A S/N 71665, has no plating loss, but some tarnishing to the tenon ring at the top of the lower joint and rear thumb bush.

E J ALBERT PAIR OF BASSET CLARINETS by PLANAS & BANGHAM |
£3795 |
|
|
A truly unique pair of Basset clarinets, originally by E J Albert,
and subsequently modified by Edward Planas and Daniel Bangham:
With Planas responsible for the Bb, and Bangham the A.
Originally these were a Cocus wood pair, now both have extensions in Grenadilla.
Bangham's design differs slightly from Planas' in that; the pads are on the rear of the A,
there is a low C vent hole,
and the touchpieces at the rear operate the lowest 4 pitches in a slightly different manner.
In addition, the four thumb keys, at the back are more like plates in the Bangham version.
These touch pieces produce the notes, Eb, D, C# and C;
which extend the compass of the instrument in order to play the Mozart Concerto, Quintet,
and Idomeneo obligattos as written for Anton Stadler.
The Bb, S/N 10477 has German Silver keywork which is very good throughout, with an excellent shine.
The wood is in good condition for its age, with no major cracks or repairs, but apparently at some point Ted Planas
intended an alternative mechanism at the top of the upper joint:
Whatever this was, there must have been a change of heart,
see photo 12, because some pillar holes and a tone hole have been plugged. None of this goes through to the bore.
The pads throughout are in Tan Leather, and the instrument is having a full overhaul in our Clarinets Direct workshop.
As usual it will be sold with our full 1 year Warranty.
The makers stamp is clearly visible on all sections.
The A, S/N 10467 has German Silver keywork and wood in excellent condition. Again all pads are Tan Leather,
there is no joint wobble. The rear thumb rest is of modern Yamaha type, incorporating a sling hook.
There is also a custom made grenadilla wood barrel which is angled for ease of playing.
The case is a custom original, in very good condition.
The pair are supplied with a German lay m'piece but can be played with any modern m'piece of 926 type.

BUFFET BASS CLARINET TO LOW C |
£3295 |
|
This is an excellent condition Buffet Bass Clarinet in Grenadilla wood, to low Eb & low C, which is a commission sale for
Clarinets Direct.
This is a unique instrument in that it features a custom made extension, a third joint, which allows the player
to choose whether the Bass plays to low Eb or low C. The history of the instrument is that it was bought new as a
low Eb Bass in 1968. The owner, a professional player, subsequently found himself playing in Evita
in the West End, his part contained one low C on the Bass clarinet: He therefore had the extension made,
rather in the manner of a Basset clarinet extension;
in that there is only a single touchpiece for each of the lowest 3 pitches, D, Db and C.
This idea was common at the time as the
Boosey and Hawkes low C Bass, the Imperial, featured this exact same optional 3rd joint.
A pity that no contemporary quality manufacturer offers this any longer.
All Nickel Silver key work is in excellent condition.
There are no cracks or damage to the wood which is pristine.
The bell and crook are both in excellent condition with no dents, just light surface scratches.
The Bass does have a double overblowing vent,
but, most unusually, the lower vent is actuated only for 2nd register B, by means of a connecting lever under the LH E/B.
The second register response is excellent, the tuning and evenness are exemplary.
This Bass has just had a thorough check over in our workshop,
where the lower joint has been re-assembled and all pads checked for seal. In addition the Bass has been regulated,
and all touch corks replaced as necessary. There is a floor peg to the bell,
the matching serial nos. are 21283 which dates to 1968.
The instrument is supplied in a brand new Pro-Tech case. The m'piece is an "as new" B45.

D NOBLET, PARIS, Bb CLARINET |
£695 |
|
|
This is an older professional Daniel Noblet Bb clarinet, with the older logo: The "D" and "N" are intertwined.
The German silver key work is excellent throughout, not plated and
with no wear. We have just entirely re-padded in Pisoni Deluxe double bladder fishskin & the clarinet is sold with
our full year's Clarinets Direct warranty. There are no cracks or damage to the wood which is in good order
throughout, with only minor surface marks and scratches.
All parts of the instrument are made from Grenadilla wood, unlike some more recent Noblets,
which were made with
plastic barrels and bells, as a cost saving exercise. The matching serial nos. are 6793.
This instrument probably dates to the late 1950's or early 1960's.
The case is the original in good condition, and the m'piece is the original Noblet in ebonite.

LEBLANC PARIS, INFINITE, Bb CLARINET |
£875 |
|
A very good condition Leblanc Infinite Bb clarinet. The Leblanc Infinite is virtually identical
in specification and design to the Leblanc Concerto: Whereas the Concerto was designed to play
firmly down to pitch throughout all registers [aimed primarily at the USA market]
the Infinite was designed to play slightly sharper in the altissimo register;
perhaps a more traditional European model!
This instrument is one of Leblanc's top professional wooden models,
it features the same polycylindrical bore design, of 14.61mm, as the Opus and Concerto.
It was made with all of Leblanc's usual engineering excellence; with gold plated needle springs,
separate pillar mounted Ab/Eb, and aged Grenadilla wood.
This example has no damage or repairs to the wood,
which is in excellent condition.
The Silver plate key work is very good. All pieces are original & all have matching stamps.
The one former owner has had Eddie Ashton super pads fitted throughout,
which are guaranteed for over 10 years of normal use. They are all sealing perfectly.
The matching serial nos. are 78669.
The supplied m'piece is a professional Vandoren 2RV in ebonite,
in good condition.
The case is the original, in excellent condition.

F ARTHUR UEBEL, BASSET HORN in F |
£5495 |
|
|
Clarinets Direct is fortunate to count many of the UK's finest players amongst our clientele.
One such is Nicholas Bucknall: Amongst his many famous recordings, he is heavily featured in the film soundtrack to
"The English Patient" .
From time to time Nick sells part of his superb collection of instruments as he makes room for further acquistions.
Nick is fastidious in his choice of instruments which are carefully selected,
and then meticulously maintained, by Jon Steward of T. W. Howarth & Co.
Nick has another Uebel Basset Horn, and this mint condition example, from 1969/70, is now offered to the market.
This is a superb handmade Basset Horn in Grenadilla wood, to low C.
The F A Uebel design of Basset Horn differs radically from that of Buffet and Leblanc
in that it is basically an extended Bb instrument.
Buffet and Leblanc Basset Horn designs are essentially modified Alto clarinets.
If you are loooking for the "authentic German sound"
associated with the Mozart Requiem, then this is the Basset for you.
This instrument is in mint condition: NO cracks, marks or damage, pristine key work throughout.
The Bassset Horn has leather pads throughout in very good condition.
This instrument will play perfectly out of the box.
A comparable Selmer retails today new for £9700.
The original m'piece is in excellent condition.

MATCHED PAIR OF HOWARTH S1 CLARINETS |
£3295 |
|
A mint condition pair of Howarth S1 clarinets.
These instruments are a one owner pair, used by a young professional lightly,
before her career direction led her to concentrate more on period instrument performance.
The unstained Grenadilla wood is in superb condition, with no scuffs or scratches, pristine.
There is no joint wobble. The pads are all sealing well,
both instruments have had recent overhauls by John Coppen.
The key work shows absolutely no wear or play to the mechanism.
The Silver plating throughout is excellent. The Bb has matching serial nos. are 1466.
The A, matching serial nos. 1508.
The supplied m'pieces are the original Howarths, unused.
The tuning is excellent with standard French bore m'pieces.
There are 3 barrels: 2 for the Bb of 63.5mm and 66mm, and 1 for the A at 66mm.
The original case and cover are in perfect condition.

The clarinet is sold with
our full year's Clarinets Direct warranty. The matching serial nos. are B4747 which dates to the 1950's:
A fine period of quality hand finished manufacture. The wood is in excellent order throughout,

These days E13's are made from inferior quality wood which is stained to hide imperfections.
The case is the original in brown leather, which despite its age, is in very good condition also.

The plating is around 95%.

though it would benefit from a good clean!
Again the tan leather pads, while not new, are all sealing well.
The instruments are made from Grenadilla wood, apart from the barrels which are plastic of 66.0mm length.
The supplied m'piece
is of ebonite and in good condition. The case is a Boosey & Hawkes model in good used condition.

MATCHED PAIR OF BUFFET PRE-R13 CLARINETS |
£1495 |
|
THE A IS SOLD. THE Bb STILL AVAILABLE IN NEW SINGLE CASE FOR £750.
A very fine pair of good condition Buffet clarinets. These instruments have a larger bore of 14.9mm,
and larger tone holes than the contemporary Buffet's. The result is a free and easy playing pair,
with excellent intonation, and none of the third register problems inherent in the polycylindrical design.
The Bb has serial number 23785 dating to 1937.
It is in very good condition, and the wood has no cracks, and no surface scratches or scuffs.
The pair have been fully overhauled in finest Deluxe Tan leather pads and are sold with our full 1 year warranty.
The excellent quality German Silver key work
has been buffed and polished.
The mouthpieces are original. One is stamped "B" the other "A".
Very interestingly the A m'piece has a slightly smaller exit bore to improve the intonation
on the A clarinet.
I imagine therefore that this was the standard Buffet practice of the time:
However this pair will play well with any modern French bore m'piece.
A, S/N 24254, dates to 1938. Is is in excellent condition throughout, with no cracks or repairs to the wood,
the surface condition is superb.
The instrument has abviously had very little use. The keywork is also pristine.
The case is the original Buffet, in good condition, and it still latches perfectly, though the handle is missing.

STUBBINS, BY NOBLET FRANCE, Bb CLARINET |
£695 |
|
An extremely rare and desirable William Stubbins Bb clarinet, made by Noblet, France,
featuring the Stubbins " booster key" for throat Bb.
As one would expect the intonation and response are greatly improved over a standard Boehm system,
but without the player noticing any difference in fingering, i.e the Stubbins mechanism does all the work!
Selmer, in the past with their Omega clarinet, and many major German makers have adopted similar designs.
This example is in excellent condition: there is no damage to the wood,
excepting an lighlty etched security number to the back of the lower joint.
The key work shows no plating wear, the Nickel silver is in fine order throughout.
The double bladder fish skin pads, while not new, are all sealing well.
There is no joint wobble, and the clarinet plays extremely well, very even and with a fine tone.
The matching serial nos. are 56627.
The supplied m'piece is an original Noblet 3V in ebonite, of very good quality.
The case, though elderly, is in good condition it latches & protects the instrument well.

JACQUES ALBERT FILS 7 RING Bb CLARINET |
£895 |
|
|
A superb 7 ring Boehm system clarinet made by the last maker of the legendary Albert family: Jacques Fils.
This instrument features both articulated C#/G# and fork Eb/Bb.
The German Silver keywork is good, very solid, and with an excellent shine.
The wood is in good condition for its age, with no major cracks or repairs, to the main body pieces, however
the bell has a stress crack to the tenon, and also a chip to the wood above the bell ring, see photos 3 & 4:
Neither of these affect the bore.
This instrument is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct,
and the current owner has had it recently fully repadded by Eddie Ashton in superpads.
From the look and style of key work this clarinet was probably made in the 1930's
and Albert retired in 1939. Albert clarinets are well known for their unique warmth and depth of tone.
To some extent they exhibit a rare synthesis of the best of German and French schools of clarinet making.
The makers stamp is clearly visible on all sections, excepting the barrel which is by "Gras".
The case is in good used condition. The m'piece is a brand new La Voz.

MATCHED
PAIR OF LEBLANC OPUS CLARINETS |
£2595 |
|
An excellent
matched pair of Leblanc Opus Paris clarinets in Silver plate. These
instruments were the finest in the modern Leblanc range and were manufactured
until the sale of the Leblanc Paris factory to Buffet. They are of
polycylindrical bore design at 14.61mm and were designed to be
better in tune and more stable than their direct competitor; the
Buffet Prestige R13. Leblanc engineering has always been of a high
standard and these clarinets feature integral raised and tapered
tone holes; Inverted taper bore barrels of the Moennig pattern; 18
keys, i.e. LH Ab/Eb, and unstained hand selected Grenadilla wood.
They also feature reflector pads at the bottom of the lower joint.
All in all a thoroughly modern design with many novel features.
Quite rightly the Opus quickly gained a large following amongst top professional
players.
There is
no damage to the wood, which is crack and repair free. The plating
overall is good but there has been some loss to the plating mainly
on the Bb, S/N 79088 which has seen more use: The A, C#/G#, & register
keys are all slightly affected. The worst key is the F/C on the
lower joint, see photo 10. It appears to be a problem in the plating
process as most of the loss is not due to fingering contact. Both instruments have had a
full check up in our workshop prior to sale; with pads replaced as necessary.
The majority have been replaced on the Bb, less on the A. The, A S/N
72700, has no plating loss.
All pieces are original and stamped Leblanc, with 4
interchangeable barrels [ the bores of the Bb and A are
identical]
of 64.4mm [ shortened from a 66mm], 64.9mm, 65.9mm and 67.0mm. The mouthpieces are
Vandoren B45 Lyre
& M15 both in good condition. The case is a modern example, it is used, but in good
condition. These instruments are a one owner pair; the former property
of a professional, they have been exceptionally well cared
for.

MATCHED PAIR OF LEBLANC PROFESSIONAL CLARINETS |
£1295 |
|
|
THE A IS RESERVED, THE Bb STILL FOR SALE IN SINGLE CASE WITH M'PIECE FOR, £645.
This matched pair of Leblanc pre-LL clarinets are a commission sale for Clarinets Direct.
Leon Leblanc, along with Charles Houvenaghel, the great Belgian acoustician,
took the manufacturing of clarinets with scientific principles even further.
Leblanc were the first major maker to set up an acoustic laboratory.
Leon was a gifted clarinettist who took the top prize at the Paris Conservatoire as a young man.
Although he could have had a great career as a performer,
Leon chose to stay with the family business and apply himself to instrument manufacture,
and bring acoustical, mechanical,
and musical improvements to woodwind instruments.
Although Leblanc's instruments were almost entirely handmade,
Leon Leblanc insisted that the craftsmen follow careful measurements.
"Music is an art, but it is still governed by the laws of science,"
he declared (Music Trades, July 1996).
As a result, Leblanc instruments were more consistent than those that had come before.
The company continued to strive for consistent quality, ease of playability,
and mechanical innovation, throughout its history.
These are a professional quality pair, and date from the mid-1950's.
The intonation and response is the equal of the most expensive French instruments sold today.
The Bb has matching serial nos. 10456 and has German Silver key work in fair condition.
There are surface scratches to some of the key work. In addition,
both F/C RH touchpieces on the clarinets have been shortened for fingering convenience.
Perhaps the same previous owner intended adding some keys,
but got no further than drilling holes for the pillars.
These don't go through to the bore and have been neatly filled in. [ see photo 11]
Apart from this the wood is in overall good condition
. There are some thread and tape repairs to the tenons, but there is no joint wobble.
All pads are leather, which despite their age are sealing well.
The A, serial nos. 10243, has no cracks or repairs. The key work throughout is in good shape.
Like the Bb, the pads are elderly but sealing well. There are some tape and thread repairs to the tenon corks.
The m'piece is a Weinberg M1 Gold, in excellent condition.
The case is of 1950's vintage in good condition.

PAIR OF SELMER CLARINETS |
£1495 |
|
A rare and fine pair of original logo Selmer clarinets.
The Bb has serial numbers 7164. There are no cracks or damage, in fact the condition is very good,
with only light surface marks to the wood, mainly on the barrel.
the pads, whilst not new, are all sealing well, they are mainly fish skin with a couple of tan leather.
The German silver keywork is in pristine condition throughout.
Note particularly the
" Brevette SGDG" which is on both top joints. Both clarinets have a bore of 14.9mm.
The A, has matching serial numbers 7038, it is likely that both instruments date just prior to the
instroduction of the more modern Selmer logo, i.e. they date from 1930.
There is no damage to the wood, which is crack and repair free. The German Silver key work is excellent throughout.
All pads are Tan Leather.
The case is a Buffet leather example from the 1970's in good used condition, with dust cover.

BUFFET PROFESSIONAL 7 RING Bb CLARINET |

|
This is a rare 7 ring Buffet pre-R13, i.e. this clarinet features a fork Eb/Bb.

This is the reason for the additional tenon ring at the top of the upper joint,
which acts as a band, to further reinforce the crack repair.
We have thoroughly checked this old repair for seal, and the wood is stable.
All parts are original Buffet with matching stamps.
Back then this was the finest professional instrument Buffet made, with unstained, matched wood.

BOXWOOD
AND IVORY C CLARINET BY NICHOLSON EARLY 19th CENTURY-ON HIRE UNTIL END OF FEB 2012 |
£595 |
|
PRICE
REDUCED!
I
am indebted to Mr. Simon Waters, who recently delivered a paper to the
Galpin Society in Edinburgh on Charles Nicholson flutes, for the chance to
quote him in this revised, and corrected listing:
"In that paper I noted that there are many flutes stamped
NICHOLSON/LONDON which are plain boxwood instruments which likely predate
the earliest Charles Nicholson NICHOLSON"S IMPROVED flutes (which
were made by ThomasProwse) by some years, and that these flutes are likely
to be from an entirely separate London-based maker called Nicholson. The
stamp they bear appears, on the basis of the photos on your website, to be
identical to that on your clarinet. I think it highly likely that the 'C'
indicates pitch, as was common practice on many makers' boxwood clarinets
of this period, and that your clarinet was made by this London-based maker
without any connection to Charles Nicholson the flautist."
A
very rare boxwood and ivory C Clarinet by Nicholson with 8 brass keys. This example has been professionally owned and played
at A=440hz. The tone holes have been filled on the two main joints in
order to tune to modern pitch. There are 5 pieces and the original African
blackwood m'piece, which has just been relayed by Edward Pillinger
& is playable with a modern Eb
reed. The wood is in good condition for its age: There are 4
repaired, sealed cracks to the upper joint, see photos 5, 6 & 7, and
also several repairs to the bell base, including 3 glued cracks to the
ivory ring. The instrument has felt squares which act as pads, these all
seal well. The tenons are bound with string which is also how the reed is
fixed to the m'piece. The stamps on the upper joint and bell read " C
Nicholson, London". The total assembled length is 589mm. I will
supply a case. |

SELMER, PARIS, PROFESSIONAL Bb CLARINET |
£395 |
|
This is a very interesting early modern logo Selmer professional Bb clarinet.
In some ways this is a transitional model. The logo is the modern Selmer type,
but a larger design, yet this is a K4252 serial number and a
"Brevete SGDG" stamp also. Note the short G# key axle,
and also the single rod for the lower joint LH levers.
All of this point to a 1930's instrument just prior to the introduction of Selmer's Radio Improved clarinet,
the first of the great modern clarinet designs.
This clarinet has been well used: There are 3 cracks to the upper joint, which do go through to the bore,
please see photos, 4,5 & 6. All of these cracks have been filled and sealed.
The pads are a mixture of Tan leather and fish skin, again they are all sealing well.
There is no joint wobble: All touch and tenon corks are also good.
There is also a large scratch to the bell interior, see photo 3.
The barrel is of the correct bore, 14.9mm,
but it is a later Selmer 10G A barrel which has been reamed out to the correct dimensions.
The German Silver keywork is in good condition,
though there are scratches and marks consistent with an instrument of this age.
The case is a modern Bundy which has been relined.

MATCHED
PAIR PETER EATON CLARINETS. WODKOWSKI COLLECTION. |
£3795 |
|
This matched pair of extremely rare Peter Eaton clarinets are a commission sale for Clarinets Direct.
These are very early Eaton's, originally commissioned by Paul Vaughan, and subsequently owned and played by David Rix.
Latterly they have been owned by Ramon Wodkowski, the Internationally acclaimed mouthpiece craftsman.
These instruments are Peter Eaton copies of pre-War Boosey and Hawkes 1010's.
They are thinner walled than current Elites and do not feature the later thick bell:
This results in a sound with more "ping" and lightness.
Even the key work, down to the Eb/Bb bis key, is a copy of Boosey Pre-war design.
The Bb has matching serial nos. 041 and has Silver plate in very good condition. The wood is in overall excellent condition,
with no cracks or repairs,
though there is a minor chip to the bell rim [ see photo 8].
All pads are Pisoni Tan Leather in good condition.
Both instruments have been down to our workshop for a thorough "check down"
with any regulation and touch cork work done as necessary.
The A, serial nos. 038, has no cracks or repairs. The Silver plate throughout is in excellent shape,
as are all Pisoni Tan Leather pads and corks. There are 2 barrels of 64mm
and 65mm. The m'piece is an early Eaton with serial no. 793.
The case is a Boosey and Hawkes of 1960's vintage in good condition.

BUFFET ACADEMY MODEL RR13 Bb CLARINET. |
£895 |
|
An extremely rare " Academy Model" vintage Buffet R13.
This is an R13 "Second". In the 1950's when a fault occured during R13 manufacture the instrument was stamped
" Academy", and sold at an approx. 20% discount on the R13 price. In some cases the fault can be difficult to find,
however with this instrument it is obvious: There must have been a problem with the reaming of the lower part
of the lower joint flare, because this part of the bore has been metal lined, see photo 9.
The tuning on the F/C and E/B lower twelfths is excellent, so I am confident this is Buffet; the manufacturers' work.
The German Silver key work is pristine throughout.
The wood is in good condition with no cracks or damage, only slight surface marks
The instrument has just been re-padded in Pisoni Premium Deluxe Fish Skin Pads,
and is sold with our full `1 year warranty`
The matching serial nos. are 41291 which dates to 1952.
Back then this was the finest professional instrument Buffet made, with unstained, matched wood.
This was before the introduction of the ""Prestige" range, which effectively downgraded the standard R13 considerably.
These days R13's are made from inferior quality wood which is stained to hide imperfections.
Buffet are currently attempting to recreate this Gold standard of manufacture in their current "Vintage R13" range
please go to www.buffetcrampon.com for more details.
The case is the original Buffet, worn but fully functional. The m'piece is in ebonite, used, but playing well.

MATCHED PAIR OF BOOSEY & HAWKES SYMPHONY 1010 CLARINETS |
£1345 |
|
This matched pair of Symphony 1010 Clarinets are a commission sale for Clarinets Direct.
The pair have been semi-professionally owned by a single owner and well maintained; the condition is very good.
In addition, they have been modified, in an unusual and expert way:
The second version of the Acton patent vent could sometimes be troublesome to set up,
with critical venting and padding required.
This ingenious adaptation of the system allows for a small adjusting screw for the top
RH ring, see photo 7, which neatly alleviates this problem. Sadly the current seller does not know who the previous owner was,
or indeed, which repair technician did this excellent work, as he bought them second hand from Michael Whites.
The Bb has serial no. 526813 and has Silver plate in very good condition.
The wood is in excellent condition though there is a tight surface hair line crack from the top tenon down to the speaker key tube.
The surface crack has been repaired in the past and the instrument has been stable for over 2 decades. All pads are Gordon Beeson
Tan Leather in good condition.
The pair has had a thorough check up in our workshop prior to sale.
The A, serial no. A 530257, has no cracks or repairs.
The Silver plate throughout is in excellent shape,
as are all the pads and corks.
As usual the A has seen less use than the Bb. There are two barrels of 64.3mm and 63.0mm.
This second is a custom made example, which has a surface crack, but as it is lined in ebonite, this has no effect.
I would dearly like to know who the original owner of this pair was,
as, with the custom barrel, and modifications to the RH mechanism,
all the indications are that they were a top professional.
The supplied m'pieces are
a Peter Eaton, stamped, "PE 1010 50:37, G" and another brand new example simply marked 1010.
The original case is also in good condition.

and pads of the closest similar type that David Fingerhut could find to match!

YAMAHA YCL34IIS, Bb CLARINET |
£395 |
|
This is a good quality, entry level, wooden student clarinet, by Yamaha,
which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct.
This model competes against the Buffet E11. The Yamaha 450, which superseded this,
has a controversial "Backun" tuning groove at the top of the bell,
which some feel makes the low E and F too sharp. This instrument is in excellent shape,
with no cracks or repairs to the wood.
The Silver plate keys are in pristine condition, with no marks or scratches.
All double bladder fish skin pads, whilst not new, are also in good condition.
The case is original,
and the m'piece is also original, a Yamaha 4C, both are in fine condition.

SELMER
PRE-CENTERED TONE Bb CLARINET |
£395 |
|
|
A
bargain professional Selmer Paris clarinet for the player not overly
worried by cosmetic issues! This pre- Centered Tone clarinet has
been professionally owned and played for the last year by a London
jazz clarinettist. There is a surface crack to
the upper joint, see photo 5, underneath the G# key which does not
go through to the bore, and has no effect on the response. There is also some
wear to the keys, though they do exhibit a good shine.
The pads are all sealing well, and all touch & tenon corks are
good. The wood shows surface scuffs and marks but all pieces are
original Selmer. There is also a repaired crack to the bell, see photo
8, and some hairline cracks to the barrel, again none of which go
through to the bore, see photo 12. The case
is an original Selmer tri-pack, well used, but functional. |

BOOSEY & HAWKES 1010 Bb CLARINET. TONY LAMB COLLECTION.
-RESERVED |
£845 |
|
|
Clarinets Direct is fortunate to count many of the UK's finest players amongst our clientele.
One such is Tony Lamb: Principal Clarinet of English National Opera. From time to time Tony sells part of
his superb collection of 1010 instruments as he makes room for further acquistions; in the elusive search for the "perfect" 1010!
All of Tony's clarinets are carefully selected and often undergo further expensive after market improvements by Jon Steward of T. W. Howarth & Co.
Typically this involve correcting intonation faults and improving the evenness of the scale.
Thus when his instruments are offered back to the market
they are immeasurably improved on standard production line B&H 1010s. This instrument was initially bought by
a semi-professional player living in Belgium, from Clarinets Direct.
He now finds it necessary to sell on some of his fine collection, and this is the first of his instruments to be offered for sale.
Here we have a mid 1980's second generation Acton Vent 1010 in superb condition.
The intonation is excellent, fit to be played in one of the world's finest orchestras.
The m'piece is a Lomax re-bored to 1010 dimensions. The banding at the top, in carbon fibre, is hard to explain:
It is usually associated with a crack repair. However this instrument has been thoroughly checked over by many experts,
including Jon Steward of Howarth's, and our own workshop. Nobody, and this includes the owners,
has been able to find a crack.
Possibly it has completely closed up: Certainly there is no sign of a crack in the bore.
All pads are Pisoni Premium Deluxe Tan Leather in good condition.
The plating overall is excellent with only slight wear to the E/B key. The lower tenon cork has been secured with sellotape
, this aside all corks are good.
The case is a B&H of the period in good used condition.
This instrument compares extremely favourably with an Eaton Elite Bb, which currently costs over £3000.

BUFFET R13 Bb CLARINET |
£1195 |
|
An excellent condition vintage Buffet R13.
This is a rare model in that it features 7 instead of the more usual 6 rings:
This enables the LH fork fingering for Eb/Bb, which is an extremely useful alternative to the first side key fingering.
The German Silver key work is pristine throughout.
The wood is in good condition with no cracks or damage, only slight surface marks
The instrument has just been re-padded in Pisoni Premium Deluxe Fish skin Pads,
and is sold with our full `1 year warranty`
The matching serial nos. are 44778 which dates to 1954.
This is one of the first R13s made, and when one plays it and appreciates the excellent intonation,
sound and response, it is easy to see why this model began to dominate the market,
as the preferred choice of all serious clarinetists.
The case is the original Buffet, worn but fully functional, it sports the original advertising slogan
" The Sweetest Clarinet Ever Made". The m'piece is an excellent Blayman, Steel Ebonite on a French blank,
in very good condition.

MATCHED PAIR OF BUFFET VINTAGE CLARINETS |
£1795 |
|
An exceptionally rare pair of Buffet clarinets, which are a commission sale for C. D.
The son of their former owner brought them to us for refurbishment. They were
played professionally by his Father: A pianist and clarinettist.
These instruments have a larger bore,
and larger tone holes than the contemporary Buffet's. The result is a free and easy playing pair,
with excellent intonation, and none of the third register problems inherent in the polycylindrical design.
The drawbacks are flatter notes on low E and F, but to some extent this is corrected
by the fact that, at this period, Buffet reamed the neck of the bell, continuing the flare of the lower joint:
this does result in exceptionally even response across into the second register, a pity this is no longer standard practise.
The Bb has serial number O963 dating to 1901. It is in good condition, but with the following faults:
A couple of repaired, sealed cracks to the upper joint. 1. A long crack running almost the entire
way down the upper joint which has been repaired in three ways: A. Three screws through the wood across
the crack to pin it. B, An ebonite ring to hold the top end in and prevent further cracking.
C. Some kind of filling. NB This is an old original repair, and it has stood the test of time, and heavy professional
use as well.
There is another small crack between the top two trill keys, which doesn't go right through to the bore.
Despite these the instrument plays excellently. The barrel is a modern Buffet of 67.5mm which tunes well.
The stamp reads "Buffet Brevette SGDG"
We have just entirely re-padded in tan leather pads, all cork and touch corks are tight,
the key regulation is excellent and there is no joint wobble.
The German silver key work has been buffed to a nice shine.
The mouthpieces are an Edward Pillinger copies of an original Carl Fischer Buffet steel ebonite m'piece: 0.98mm tip by 17.5mm,
and a used Selmer B*.
The A clarinet, S/N E 37, dates to 1890. Is is in excellent condition throughout, with no cracks or repairs to the wood.
The bore is 14.75mm and this instrument works well with a Buffet 65mm barrel, which is supplied.
The key work is also excellent, like the Bb we have entirely re-padded in Pisoni Premium Deluxe Tan Leather.
The L1 F/C fingerhole has been bushed in ebonite, a nice repair.
Both instruments play at A=440 Hz with the supplied barrels.
The case is a modern Yamaha, in good condition with keys.

YAMAHA YCL64 Bb CLARINET -RESERVED |
£695 |
|
A superb condition Yamaha Bb clarinet.
It is received wisdom within the music industry that when Yamaha launch a new product,
they will have made every conceivable effort to outdo their competitors,
at a considerabily cheaper price to the customer.
So it was in the late 1970's and early 1980's, when Yamaha made their first serious foray into top
of the range professional clarinets. The wood was computer controlled, kiln dried, to assist in avoiding cracking,
the silver plate, and key work, was of considerably better quality than Buffet.
Many players found the ease with which these instruments responded completely won them over.
Eddie Daniels, the world's foremost jazz player was such a convert:
Perhaps surprisingly he preferred and endorsed the YCL64/65 range
to the YCL84/85 which were Yamaha's most expensive Custom models.
Though the 64 and 65 were sold as professional clarinets, unlike the modern 650, which is a Buffet E13 rival.
The modern equivalent of the YCL64/65 is todays Yamaha CX Custom or above.
The instrument has no cracks or damage to the wood, which is finest aged, unstained, Grenadilla.
The Silver plated key work is also pristine throughout.
The double bladder fish skin pads, whilst not new, are all sealing well.
All touch and tenon corks are good. There is no joint wobble.
The instrument features an adjustable thumbrest.
The matching serial nos. are 005349. The m'piece is a Yamaha 4C in excellent condition,
as is the Yamaha hard shell case.

LAFLEUR LONDON & PARIS Eb CLARINET |
£595 |
|
This is an extremely rare Lafleur London & Paris Eb clarinet.
Just as early Boosey and Hawkes pre-war 1010's were stamped London and Paris,
I have seen professional Lafleur clarinets similarly stamped. I am not sure of the history of the Lafleur brand, but prior
to their amalgamation into the Boosey and Hawkes group, they did seem to manufacture fine instruments.
After their take over the Lafleur stamp seems to have been put on only poorer student models made by Boosey & Hawkes.
The wood condition overall is very fine, with only minor surface marks.
There are NO cracks or repairs. The Nickel silver plate shows some tarnish and wear, it is about 65%. Please see the photos
This Eb has just had a complete overhaul in double bladder fish skin pads and is sold with our 1 year warranty.
The m'piece is the original, on a Chedeville blank,
just relayed by Ramon Wodkowski to approximate Vandoren 5RV Lyre dimensions.
The case is the original, in good condition.

YAMAHA YCL 34 II Bb CLARINET |
£425 |
|
This is a good quality, entry level, wooden student clarinet, by Yamaha.
This model competes against the Buffet E11. The Yamaha 450, which superseded this,
has a controversial "Backun" tuning groove at the top of the bell,
which some feel makes the low E and F too sharp. This instrument is in excellent shape,
with no cracks or repairs to the wood. The Nickel Silver plating is in good condition,
with only slight wera to the throat G# key and RH rings.
We have just completely overhauled in Pisoni Premium Deluxe double bladder fishskin pads
& the instrument is sold with full 1 year warranty.
The case is original, in good condition, and the m'piece is an upgrade to a Special " The Masteller", Battle Creek B.

J. C. DENNER BAROQUE C CLARINET, by ACKERMAN
|
£995
|
|
This is a unique clarinet. It is a faithful reproduction of a Baroque C clarinet, by J.
C. Denner, made in the early part of the 18th Century.
Denner is credited with developing the clarinet from the chalumeau
by widening the bore, providing a bell, and enabling the instrument to overblow:
All features of this clarinet.
This instrument was made for Alan Hacker by Brian Ackerman in
the 1970's, and this instrument can quite rightly be seen as the start of a reproduction industry which
went on to stimulate a revival of interest and an era of
period instrument performance. The clarinet has 2 brass keys, is in boxwood and has five main pieces. The reed, a modern soprano sax reed can be cut down to fit,
is attached to the mouthpiece by string. The approximate length is 60cm and the instrument plays
in the key of C. The bore is cylindrical, apart from the bell, and measures 14.75mm. A is approximately 423Hz.
This instrument was used by Alan Hacker for a recording of Vivaldi's Concerto in C for 2 Oboes and 2 Clarinets.

J C DENNER
C CLARINET REPRODUCTION BY ACKERMAN
|
£995 |

This is a unique clarinet. It is a faithful reproduction of the first clarinet ever made, by Johann
Christian Denner in approximately 1690. The instrument was made for Alan Hacker by Brian Ackerman in
the 1970's, and this instrument can quite rightly be seen as the start of a reproduction industry which
went on to stimulate a revival of interest and an era of
period instrument performance. The clarinet has 2 brass keys, is in boxwood and has three main pieces. The reed, a modern soprano sax reed can be cut down to fit,
is attached to the mouthpiece by string. The approximate length is 50cm and the instrument plays
in the key of C. The bore is cylindrical and measures 14.60mm. A is approximately 423Hz.

GOULDING & Co. BOXWOOD C CLARINET-ON HIRE UNTIL END OF FEB 2012 |
£645 |
|
An exceptionally rare and fine Goulding & Co Boxwood C Clarinet. This instrument is in excellent condition,
with all pieces matching and stamped: The bell reads "Goulding & Co. New Bond Street London"
It has just undergone a full and complete restoration by Alan Hacker, who has long experience in this field.
He assures me this instrument dates to 1811. It plays at modern pitch A=440 Hz. There are 5 main pieces with a modern copy of an original
m'piece by Edward Pillinger, which uses modern Eb reeds. In total there are 5 brass keys. There are no
cracks or damage to the wood. Unusually this instrument has been in one family from new. It has passed from generation to generation
with the current owner a professional Opera singer. The wooden box is again original, though the latch has failed.
This is a stunning clarinet; perfectly playable and also ideal for a collector.

SELMER BUNDY ALTO CLARINET |
£495 |
|
This is a nice condition Selmer Bundy Alto Clarinet in Resonite to low Eb.
There are no cracks or damage to the body; minor surface scratches and marks only.
The crook is in excellent condition with no dings or scratches. The bell is also in good condition,
it has only the slightest flattening to the base, and also
light scratches where it comes into contact with the low E/B rod, the usual place to find scratches!
There is only slight plating loss to some of the Nickel Silver ring finger touchpieces; the plating is around 95%.
There is also a scratched number in the tenon ring at the top of the instrument, presumably for insurance or security purposes [see photo 3].
The Alto has had a full Pisoni Premium Deluxe Repad and overhaul & is sold with our full years warranty.
The serial nos. are 9467. The case is used, but with a good interior and exterior: All latches
function well.
The m'piece is the original Bundy in excellent condition, just relayed to 1.6mm by 19.5mm.
it works well with a Vandoren No. 2 or Rico 2.5 reed. This is a fine example of the proven Selmer design,
it plays easily and is an ideal first Alto clarinet purchase. This instrument was taken by us in Part Exchange against
a professional wooden Alto. The last former adult owner used it in a clarinet choir, and has maintained the instrument well.

BUFFET BC20 Bb CLARINET |
£895 |
|
When the American investor Martin Tolchin bought Buffet Crampon company he felt that though the R13 sold
well in the USA different models would be more successful in Europe.
The S1, Continentale and BC20, which evolved into the RC, were all attempts to make darker,
more focused sounding clarinets. This is a BC 20 Bb clarinet
serial no. F65992 dating to 1961.
This, therefore, must be one of the earliest BC20's manufactured, right in the middle of
Buffet Crampon's so called "Golden Era" . Most unusually for a BC20, the key work is solid German Silver, not plated.
This will buff up beautifully: NB, the clarinet was photographed prior to going into our workshop.
The wood is excellent throughout with no cracks, damage or repairs,
excepting the bell, which has two cracks which have been filled and sealed in the past, see photos, 8 & 9.
The key regulation is tight and there is no joint wobble.
The instrument has had a complete overhaul & re-pad in Pisoni Premium Deluxe fish skin pads
and is sold with a full years' Clarinets Direct warranty. The m'piece is a used Vandoren 5RV in good condition.
This tunes the instrument right down to A=440Hz, despite the F prefix this instrument does not want to play at A=442!
The used case is a modern Buffet in black leather in good condition.

BUFFET CRAMPON Bb CLARINET, CIRCA 1860-SOLD |
£2495 |
|
This is the earliest, and rarest Buffet Crampon clarinet,
that Clarinets Direct has been privileged to offer to the market.
I am indebted to Professor John Playfair, for his initial work,
in preparing this Vintage instrument for sale.
The clarinet is in Grenadilla wood throughout, including mouthpiece.
To the best of our knowledge all pieces are matching and original.
Only the barrel no longer has a Buffet stamp,
but the tenon rings are a match for the other parts of the clarinet.
The pad cups are of the "salt spoon" variety. According to Rendall,
this style of cup was adopted circa 1820,
and was superceeded after 40 or 50 years by the modern type flat pad cup.
Thus we can confidently date this Buffet Bb to the decade commencing 1860.
The instrument itself, is in excellent condition for its age.
It features a bore of 14.8mm, with the usual Buffet under-cutting.
There is a short flare at the bottom of the lower joint.
The overall diameter of this clarinet is some 1mm less than a modern Buffet,
so the walls are approximately 0.5mm thinner.
The tuning is A=440 Hz with modern Vandoren or Gigliotti m'pieces.
With the original mouthpiece, which is very large inside, the pitch is closer to A=438.
There is some narrowness to the twelfths, especially in the RH.
We suspect that the bore at the top of the upper joint may have slightly closed up over time,
which exacerbates this problem.
As is usual with modern Buffets the barrel is of larger bore than the start of the upper joint.
There are no cracks or damage to the main pieces, though the bell shows multiple cracks;
11 in total. In addition, the lowest ring tone hole of the lower joint has been re-lined in metal.
In the past the bell tenon ring has been removed and replaced incorrectly, upside down.
This may in part account for some of the damage. The keywork is beautifully crafted and features barrels
fashioned largely from solid silver. This explains the oxidisation of the throat and register key barrels.
Note the particularly fine double pillar mount for the G# throat key, see photo 4.
Please note that this clarinet has been photographed part way through a process of restoration.
This accounts for the screw heads protruding from the pillars, tape temporary repairs to the tenon cork,
and also for the fact that the key work has not been buffed.
The instrument is now with one of the UK's top instrument makers and restorers,
for a symapthetic and complete restoration.
It is highly likely that the bell will have to remain "in situ",
as we would not want to risk any further damage to the bottom tenon or bell.
The clarinet plays superbly, with a freedom and evenness.
Also a particularly light and sweet tone: Quintessential Buffet Crampon.

BOOSEY & HAWKES IMPERIAL Bb CLARINET, in EBONITE |
£595 |
|
An extremely rare B&H 926 Bb, in ebonite, which has been exceptionally well cared for.
The Imperial 926 was manufactured to the same standard as the Imperial Symphony 1010,
both top of the range professional quality instruments.
This clarinet was the former property of a well known British player,
who as an RSC musician preferred this instrument for on-stage work.
The instrument is lighter than a Grenadilla wood example, and has an exceptionally free and lively tone.
The intonation is also superb, one of the best 926's I have ever come across.
This could have something to do with the early serial number,
and the fact that ebonite can be machined more precisely than Grenadilla wood.
The instrument has double bladder fish skin pads all in excellent condition.
The bore and body are excellent with no cracks, damage or wear, only slight surface marks.
The Nickel plate is showing some wear to both rings and touch pieces,
but the key work is in very good
shape. There is no wobble or slackness in the regulation.
The matching serial nos. are 49686, which probably dates to the late 1940's.
The No.2 B & H m'piece is in good condition.
The case is old, and possibly original, it still functions well.

STRASSER MARIGAUX BASS CLARINET TO LOW Eb-RESERVED |
£995 |
|
|
This is an extremely interesting and rare Bass clarinet, in Grenadilla wood to low Eb.
Strasser, Marigaux, and Lemaire were makers specialising in professional, saxophones, oboes and clarinets.
Today, as Marigaux, they survive as one of the World's finest oboe manufacturers.
Lemaire was the clarinettist and this instrument is a rare Bass clarinet, which is stamped "Strasser Marigaux".
Sadly Lemaire was the first of the founders of the company to die,
so it is likely that this instrument was manufactured after his death; i.e. it dates to the early 1960's.
This must have been made as a professional model featuring as it does:
Articulated C#/G#, alternative LH Ab/Eb and compensating low G/D hole.
This Bass has had a complete Pisoni Premium Deluxe Tan Leather re-pad in our workshop,
& is sold with our full 1 year warranty.
All the German Silver key work has been buffed to a nice shine, and is in very good condition.
The wood overall shows surface marks and scratches,
in addition there is an old repaired crack to the upper portion of the upper joint:
See photo 4, the crack has been pinned no less than 8 times, an excellent quality repair.
There is also a smaller crack to the upper part of the lower joint, see photo 10.
This has not been pinned, just filled.
These are old stable repairs, which we have thoroughly checked in the workshop as part of the overhaul.
There is also a dent to the crook. The bell is in good condition.
In short this instrument is in poor cosmetic condition; but plays superbly, with an excellent tone.
We have also fitted a floor peg attachment to the base of the bell.
The case is in fair condition.
The m'piece is an excellent Selmer C*.

NORMANDY, BY LEBLANC, PLATEAU Bb CLARINET-RESERVED |
£725 |
|
The Normandy Bb clarinet was a range of student clarinets
made by Leblanc. This clarinet was based on the Noblet
professional model, it has a bore of 14.85mm and a cylindrical taper in the upper joint.
This is an extremely rare plateau clarinet, i.e. all touchpieces are covered hole.
The Nickel Silver key work shows some wear, mainly to the "ring" finger touchpieces.
We have just entirely re-padded in finest Pisoni Premium Deluxe Tan Leather pads,
with the exception of the C#/G# and register key which are in cork.
The clarinet is sold with our full year's Clarinets Direct warranty.
The matching serial nos. are 34863.
There are no cracks or damage to the wood;
however there were some minor chips to lower joint receiver tenon, which we have repaired.
The wood is natural, unstained, Grenadilla of the finest quality.
This clarinet would suit a doubler on sax or flute,
or even the arthritic player who may have difficulty covering the standard open tone-hole ring keys.
The case is of aluminium in good condition, and the m'piece is a used Noblet.
This instrument responds extremely well for a plateau; with none of the usual "stuffiness" in the RH
lower register.

MATCHED PAIR OF ORIGINAL LOGO SELMER CLARINETS-RESERVED |
£1995 |
|
An exceptionally rare and fine pair of original logo Selmer clarinets. These instruments are sold with a copy
of all the receipts, which accurately date them to February 1925. The supplying dealer,
Baxter Northrop, also has their stamp on the bell. This pair are possibly the finest condition early Selmer
pair on the market in the world today. There has only been one former owner.
The Bb has matching serial numbers K1864. There are no cracks or damage, in fact the condition is very good,
with only light surface marks to the wood, mainly on the barrel.
The German silver keywork is in pristine condition throughout. The system is Boehm, but with articulated C#/G# and fork Eb/Bb.
Note particularly the
" Brevette SGDG" which is on both top joints. Both clarinets have a bore of 14.9mm.
The A, has matching serial numbers A1070, which confounds many internet sites which state that Selmer S/N's started with a "K" prefix.
Even more surprising the "A" and "K" prefixes would appear to have been stamped simultaneously. One neat idea would be that the "A" prefix
was for an "A" clarinet, but I have seen early Selmer Bb's also with the "A" prefix.
There is no damage to the wood, which is crack and repair free. The German Silver key work is excellent throughout.
All pads are new Pisoni Deluxe Tan Leather & both clarinets are sold with our full years warranty.
The case is the original Pouchette leather example from the 1920's in excellent used condition, with dust cover.
The m'piece is a Vandoren 2RV.

BUFFET RC Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£1195 |
|
A very fine Buffet RC clarinet in Silver plate.
When the American investor Martin Tolchin bought Buffet Crampon in the mid 1970's he felt that
though the R13 sold well in the USA, different models would be more successful in Europe.
The S1, Continentale and BC20, which became the RC, were all attempts to make darker,
more focused sounding clarinets. The RC, introduced in 1975, did find much more favour in the UK, than the R13:
It had a more relaxed warm tone, which attracted many players.
This Bb has serial no. F488992 dating to 2001.
The wood is excellent throughout with no cracks, damage or repairs.
There is a only slight wear to the Silver plating, mainly on the throat G# & A keys,
the first LH ring and register key.
The key regulation is tight and there is no joint wobble.
The instrument has had a complete overhaul & re-pad in Pisoni Premium Deluxe fish skin pads
and is sold with a full years' Clarinets Direct warranty. The instrument features an adjustable thumb rest.
The m'piece is a used Buffet, in excellent condition.
The original case is also in very good shape, and comes with the keys.

SELMER, PARIS, Eb CLARINET
-RESERVED |
£1695 |
|
|
This is an extremely fine Selmer Paris professional Eb Clarinet.
Selmer Eb clarinets are probably the most popular choice amongst professional players
worldwide due to their fine ergonomics and excellent intonation.
The wood shows no cracks or damage, apart from a tight hairline surface crack to the bell, see photo 12.
The workshop considers this crack so fine, and, as it does not go through to the bore, a repair is unnecessary.
The Nickel Silver plate shows no wear, though the key work will be buffed and polished as part of our overhaul.
NB The instrument was photographed prior to going through our workshop.
The S/N is B6104 which dates to 1980.
In addition a further series of matching serial nos. have been etched into the wood,
possibly the clarinet previously belonged to a School of Music, or was part of a band inventory.
The instrument has just been fully overhauled in our workshop in Pisoni Premium Deluxe fish skin pads,
and is sold with our full years' warranty. The m'piece is a Selmer HS**, in good condition.
The barrel is stamped 47 i.e. 47mm long.

BUFFET R13 Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£1195 |
|
|
An excellent condition vintage Buffet R13. The German Silver key work is pristine throughout.
The wood is in good condition with no cracks or damage, only surface marks, consistent with its age.
The instrument has just been re-padded throughout in cork, with the exception of the lowest 4 pads which
are in Pisoni Premium Deluxe Fish skin Pads,
and is sold with our full `1 year warranty`
The matching serial nos. are 56567 which dates to 1957.
This instrument will not disappoint; the quality of scale and intonation
are everything one has come to expect from this period of careful hand manufacture.
The case is the original leather pouchette type, worn but fully functional
and the m'piece is a modern Buffet
in very good condition.

An excellent condition Buffet DG Prestige Bb clarinet, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct.
The current owner is a professional player from Holland.
The DG, named after Buffet's chief designer of the 1990's, Daniel Gautier,
was one of their finest designs ever:
The tuning of the RH 12ths is unsurpassed by any model in their current line up.
The bore is slightly smaller than the RC, and less undercut,
and the instrument responds with a dark and powerful tone,
uniform across the range.
No surprise therefore that this model is played by many of the players in the UK's top orchestras.
The Silver plate key work is excellent throughout.
The instrument has just been completely re-padded in Pisoni Premium Deluxe White Leather.
The matching serial nos. are 403412, which dates to 1995.
This instrument features unstained hand selected Grenadilla wood.
Please go to www.buffetcrampon.com for more details.
There are no cracks or damage to the wood, which is in pristine condition.
There are 2 Buffet barrels, of 64.3mm & 66.5mm, but the former owner preferred to use a Zinner,

LEBLANC PARIS, LL, Bb CLARINET -SOLD |
£745 |
|
Leon Leblanc, along with Charles Houvenaghel, the great Belgian acoustician,
took the use of scientific principles in manufacturing clarinets even further:
Leblanc were the first major maker to set up an acoustic laboratory.
Leon was a gifted clarinettist, who though he took the top performing prize at the Paris Conservatoire as a young man,
chose to stay with the family business, and apply himself to instrument manufacture.
He was determined to bringing acoustical, mechanical,
and musical improvements to woodwind instruments.
The LL model, named for Leon, was, some feel, the pinnacle of this achievement.
This Leblanc LL Bb clarinet is in mint condition.
The intonation and response is the equal of the most expensive French instruments sold today.
The clarinet has matching serial nos. 21951, which dates to 1964, and has Silver plate in pristine condition.
The clarinet features 7 rings rather than the more usual 6, i.e. with the fork Eb/Bb.

|
THE A IN DOUBLE CASE IS SOLD, THE Bb IS RESERVED.
A very good condition pair of Buffet, Evette & Schaeffer E13 clarinets.
These instruments are a one owner pair, and were bought new from T W Howarth & Co. Ltd
in 1982, they must have been one of the last pairs of Evette Schaeffer's manufactured
by Buffet
before the fully automated machine production of E13's became the norm.
The unstained Grenadilla wood is in superb condition, with no scuffs or scratches, pristine.
There is no joint wobble. The pads, which are mainly double bladder fish skin, are all sealing well,
both instruments have had a thorough check down in our workshop:
The majority of the pads were replaced on the Bb,
but the A had seen far less use; only a couple of pads needed replacing.
The key work on both clarinets has also been regulated,
with all touch and tenon corks replaced as necessary.
Some of the pads prone to attracting water are in cork: The register keys on both clarinets,
as well as the C#/G# keys and the lower trill keys.
The key work shows little wear or play to the mechanism;
in stark contrast to more recent E13 manufacture.
The Nickel Silver plating throughout is excellent on

The A, which has pristine Silver plate has matching serial nos. F52536.

BUFFET RC Bb CLARINET-RESERVED |
£1250 |
|
This fine Buffet RC Bb clarinet is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct.
It is a one owner instrument.
When the American investor Martin Tolchin bought Buffet Crampon in the mid 1970's
he felt that though the R13 sold well in the USA,
different models would be more successful in Europe.
The S1, Continentale and BC20, which became the RC, were all attempts to make darker,
more focused sounding clarinets.
The RC, first introduced in 1975, did find much more favour in the UK,
than the R13: It had a more relaxed warm tone, which did attract many players.
This Bb has serial no. 174569 dating to 1977, thus it is one of the first RC's made, and additionally, has a UK stamp.
Generally Buffet RC's from this period are considered the best of their production.
The Prestige range had not been introduced yet; which considerably downgraded the quality of the standard,
R13 and RC,
and furthermore, Buffet considered the RC of this period their best model, and charged more for it than the contemporary R13.
Boosey & Hawkes had also not yet taken over Buffet and forced a large increase in production.
The wood is excellent throughout with no cracks, damage or repairs.
There is a no wear to the Nickel Silver plating, which is in pristine order.
The key regulation is tight and there is no joint wobble. The instrument has had a complete overhaul
& re-pad in Pisoni Premium Deluxe fish skin pads and is sold with a full years' Clarinets Direct warranty.
