A rare Valentin Metzler boxwood 6 keys Bb clarinet. This clarinet can be confidently dated to the period of 1812-1815, because of the Metzler Wardour Street stamp, and is in excellent condition for its age. Made with brass keys and ivory rings, the instrument has all original stamped pieces, and includes an African blackwood m'piece, which, though it has suffered some damage to the tip rail, could be used as the basis for a modern copy. The instrument does not yet come completely apart, with the bell and lower section fixed in place, and it will need a complete restoration to be playable. There are no cracks or damage to the boxwood or ivory. Because ivory remains on the CITES appendix, the current seller would prefer that the instrument remained in the UK. However if a foreign buyer is interested, then he would be prepared to consider a sale abroad, if that purcaser was willing to accept the cost and time delay of applying for the necessary CITES re-export license. The clarinet measure 66cms fully assembled so it is likely to be in Bb. It comes in an excellent condition modern padded case.
