SELMER
MARCHI SYSTEM Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£3995 |
|
|
Clarinets
Direct is pleased to be able to offer this unique and exceptional
clarinet, perhaps the "Jewel in the Crown" of the James
Joseph collection, for sale. This
is an excellent condition Marchi System Selmer Series 10S Bb
Clarinet. Probably the rarest, most finely engineered, and complex
French clarinet ever put into production. The additional register
key on the barrel extends the practical range of this instrument to
well over four and half octaves! This in addition to the advantages
of a full Boehm clarinet to low Eb. This example has seen hardly any
use and is pristine: all wood, key work and corks are perfect, as
new. The two supplied barrels are 64.5
& 66.5 mm respectively.
The matching serial nos. are B6680 which dates to 1981.

BUFFET
MASTER MODEL Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£695 |
|
|
A
very fine condition vintage Buffet Master Model E13. The Nickel Silver key
work is excellent throughout, with no wear at all. We have just entirely re-padded in
double bladder fishskin &. the clarinet is sold with our full
year's Clarinets Direct warranty. The matching serial nos.
are D25802 which dates to the mid 1970's. Back then the E13 range
was tested at the Buffet factory, with the finest instruments then
undergoing further hand tuning and undercutting to improve the response.
Therefore the customer had an instrument which was almost identical
to an R13 on quality, but at less cost: Please see the photographed
original Buffet brochure. These days E13's are made from inferior quality wood which is
stained to hide imperfections. There are no cracks or damage to the
wood; excepting a repair to a small surface hairline crack
at the top of the lower joint underneath the tenon ring. The crack
is only on the outer surface , it does not go through into the bore,
as the upper joint tenon forms the bore at this point, see photo 10. The case is used but in very good
condition, and the m'piece is a stock Buffet stamped 116
tip by 16.5mm length. |

|
This
is the top of the range professional "Monopole"
Conservatoire model Bb clarinet made by Couesnon. At one time they
were the largest French manufacturer of band instruments, and
trumpet and clarinet manufacture continued until the 1960's. Auguste
Perier, the great French clarinettist, endorsed the
"Monopole" clarinet, which was considered one of the best
instruments in the period after the 1st World War. This example
dates from the early 1960's and is in very good condition. The
matching serial nos., on all pieces , are 30570. The Maillechort key
work is in good order throughout. The double bladder pads though
older, are all sealing well, and all corks are also good. The

the upper part of the lower joint, see photo 9. The bore is 14.7mm,
remarkably close to a Buffet R13 of the period, however the tuning,

MARTEL
FRERES a MANTES Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£995 |
|
|
This
is the quintessential French clarinet; possibly the finest ever
French makers were Martel Freres. Each instrument was completely
hand made and undercut, this process alone took 2-3 days, until a
perfectly even scale was achieved. Hawkes and Co. came to the
surviving Martel brother after WW1 to help them design their own
legendary Hawkes' Martels, as played by Reginald Kell, Charles
Draper etc These evolved into the Boosey and Hawkes pre-war 1010
from which the genealogy of fine English wide bore instruments can
be traced to the present day. The playing characteristics are unique
and exceptional: Perfect uninhibited open response, and excellent
tuning make for a true "players clarinet" which is a
physical delight to blow. This
early example is stamped " Martel Freres a Mantes" and is
in excellent condition with matching serial nos. 1305 on all main
pieces. The French polish is 65% or more, exceptional for a pre WW1
vintage clarinet. There is one tight hairline crack, which does not
enter the bore or tenon to the top of the upper joint, see photo 11.
This aside, the wood is in superb condition for a vintage clarinet.
All Maillechort key work and springs are in excellent order. The
clarinet has been recently fully overhauled, and we are happy to
extend our full 1 year Clarinets Direct warranty to this instrument.
The supplied Vandoren m'piece tunes perfectly at A=440. The original
case still latches and protects this rare & desirable
instrument.

A
unique opportunity for the serious player or collector. This is a
superb condition 19th Century boxwood, brass keyed, high pitch C clarinet
[A=452 Hz]. It plays very well with

clarinet reeds. There are 7 salt spoon keys in total, which all have
white leather pads in good condition. The boxwood overall is
excellent, with only one tight surface crack to the upper joint [see

Sadly McIntyre was never able to persuade a major manufacturer to
back his "improvement" and though he managed to get his
clarinet made in France, ultimately his company became bankrupt. For
those unfamiliar with the fingering it works as follows: throat G#
is fingered solely by the third finger of the LH; A by 3rd and 2nd fingers:
Bb, by all three in the LH. Ingenious: In addition the Bb has it's
own dedicated hole so the quality and pitch are improved. This
example is playing very well, and has wood and keywork in excellent
condition. The matching serial nos. are 1220. It is a perfectly
usable clarinet as is, or possibly one for a collector. The case is
worn but fully functional. There is no mouthpiece but I found a
standard Vandoren 5RV Lyre tuned it very well.

PAIR OF BUFFET S1 CLARINETS-SOLD |
£1995 |
|
|
A
matched
pair of Buffet S1 clarinets in Nickel plate. When the American
investor Martin Tolchin bought Buffet Crampon in the mid 1970's he
felt that though the R13 sold well in the USA, different models
would be more successful in Europe. The S1, Continentale and BC20,
which became the RC, were all attempts to make darker, more focused
sounding clarinets. In the case of the S1 this is partly achieved by
much less undercutting. The Bb serial no. 154453
is in very fine condition, there are two Teflon bands which are used
to repair cracks on the upper joint, but I can see no sign of a
crack, certainly there is no crack through to the bore: Therefore
the repair must have done its work most efficiently, see photo
11. There is very little wear to the plating and the key
regulation is tight, there is no joint wobble. Both instruments have had a
full re-pad in Pisoni Premium Deluxe pads and are sold with a full
years' warranty. The A has S/N 156171, which also dates to
1975, there is no damage to the wood, though the plate shows a
little wear mainly in the RH "pinky" keys. This
instruments play with a robust, focused sound and excellent evenness
and intonation. In the past players such as John McCaw and Mitchell
Lurie played S1's.The m'piece is a Chedeville SML, just relayed to
1.1mm by 17mm, and the case is the original, in good condition.

very good example of a "Golden Era" Buffet R13. The
Nickel Silver keywork is excellent with only a very slight plating
loss. The clarinet has just been fully
overhauled in Pisoni Premium Deluxe double bladder fish skin pads by
Clarinets Direct. The matching serial nos.

professional instrument
Buffet made; with unstained, matched wood. This was before the
introduction of the ""Prestige" range, which
effectively downgraded the standard R13 considerably. These days R13's are made from inferior quality wood which is
stained to hide imperfections. The wood overall is in good
condition, but there is a repaired crack to the bell, which is
covered by our warranty. This is a superb playing R13, with excellent
scale and evenness. The m'piece is a Vandoren 5RV in good

HAWKES
EXCELSIOR, MARTEL, Bb CLARINET -SOLD |
£995 |
|
Hawke's and Co. came to the
surviving Martel brother after WW1 to help them design their own
legendary Hawkes' Martels, as played by Reginald Kell, Charles
Draper etc These evolved into the Boosey and Hawke's pre-war 1010
from which the genealogy of fine English wide bore instruments can
be traced to the present day. The playing characteristics are unique
and exceptional: Perfect uninhibited open response, and excellent
tuning make for a true "players clarinet" which is a
physical delight to blow. This
early example is stamped " Hawkes Excelsior LP Bb" and is
in excellent condition with matching serial nos. 11147 on all main
pieces. The serial number dates to 1925. Though there are surface scratches
and minor marks the wood is in superb condition for a vintage
clarinet, with an excellent interior bore shine.
All Maillechort key work and springs are in excellent order. The
clarinet has just been recently fully overhauled, in tan leather and we are happy to
extend our full 1 year Clarinets Direct warranty to this instrument.
The supplied m'piece come from an original Martel Freres Bb of
my own personal collection & it tunes perfectly at A=440. the
m'piece has just been re-layed to 1.05 by 17mm. The case is worn but
fully functional.

STUBBINS
by NOBLET Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£495 |
|
An
extremely rare and desirable William Stubbins Bb clarinet, made by
Noblet, featuring the Stubbins " booster key" for throat
Bb. As one would expect the intonation and response are greatly
improved over a standard Boehm system, but without the player
noticing any difference in fingering, i.e the Stubbins mechanism
does all the work! Selmer, in the past with their Omega clarinet,
and many major German makers have adopted similar designs. This
example is in fair condition: there are two chips to the upper joint
tenons, please see photos 4 & 5. There are also surface marks
and scratches to the wood. The key work shows some plating wear,
mainly to the register key. The double bladder fish skin pads, while
not new, are all sealing well. There is no joint wobble, and the
clarinet plays extremely well, very even and with a fine tone. The
supplied m'piece is a Buffet "C" in ebonite, of very good
quality. The case, though elderly, latches & protects the
instrument well.

SELMER 10G
Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£695 |
|
|
An
extremely fine Selmer 10G clarinet. The Selmer
10G was named for Anthony Gigliotti, onetime principal Clarinet of
the Philadelphia Orchestra. Gigliotti had become frustrated with
certain shortcomings in the R13 design and went to Buffet Crampon
with modifications, Buffet weren't impressed, but Selmer were.
The result was the 10G: an improved, "Americanised "R13,
with warmer sound and better intonation. Hans W Moennig and Ralph
Morgan were also major contributors to the design. This
Bb, S/N D3869, has wood and Silver plate in very good condition.
There is a pinned surface crack repair to the top of the upper joint
[see photo 5]. It is an old & unnecessary repair: the crack doesn't
enter the bore OR go into a tone hole. The current owner has
played this instrument at the RCM and tells me that the repair has
been stable for the last 3 years with heavy and consistent use.
There is also a small hair line crack to one of the Bb barrels
{65mm}. As 10G barrels are ebonite lined, after the Moennig pattern,
this is also not an issue. The remainder of the wood is in excellent
condition, as are the pads and corks. The case is an older
Selmer
and comes with a key, the m'piece is a used Vandoren B45..

unique and rare plateau full Boehm Bb clarinet. This one has
all the extras: :fork Eb/Bb, articulated C#'G#, LH Ab/Eb key and low
Eb. There is no makers stamp, though given the quality of workmanship and
style of key work, I think this may be of German manufacture. It is
certainly pre-WWII. There are no cracks or damage to the wood. But the
original thumb rest has been replaced with a more modern design, and the
moved higher, the old position holes have been filled see photo 8. The
Maillechort key work is in very good condition. This is a commission
sale for Clarinets Direct, the current owner tells me that he recently had
the instrument completely overhauled by Hanson in tan leather pads. In
addition he preferred to play this clarinet with a Buffet barrel,
supplied, and a Vandoren 5RV, also supplied, in excellent condition. The
case is also in very good shape. The instrument tunes well at A=440 &
would suit a sax/flute doubler. |

A
very good example of a "Golden Era" Buffet R13. The
instrument has been professionally owned and played by one of the
UK's top session and West End players. The
Nickel Silver keywork is excellent with only a very slight plating
loss to the low F#/C# key. The clarinet has just been fully
overhauled in Pisoni Premium Deluxe Tan Leather by John Coppen. The matching serial nos.
are 168598 which dates to 1976, at this time Buffet stamped R13's
for the British market with a "UK", to reinforce the fact
that they were designed to play at A=440. Back then this, along with the RC, was the finest
professional instrument
Buffet made; with unstained, matched wood. This was before the
introduction of the ""Prestige" range, which
effectively downgraded the standard R13 considerably. These days R13's are made from inferior quality wood which is
stained to hide imperfections. The wood overall is in good
condition, but John Coppen has filled 2 surface cracks which run
from the top of the upper joint into the first trill key hole, this
hole has also been relined [see photo4]. The repair is of excellent
quality, and the cracks do not run through into the bore, they are
on the surface only: Therefore the sound and intonation are
completely unaffected. This is a superb playing R13, with excellent
scale and evenness, and the reason for its sale, and the Rhodium
plated R13 Prestige recently sold by Clarinets Direct is that their
current owner is funding a Flute purchase. The m'piece is a Selmer
C85 120 in good condition, as is the Orly case. |

Buffet E12 Bb CLARINET-SOLD |

|
|
A near mint Buffet Model E12. The E12 is the best of the intermediate range of Buffet's wooden clarinets,
superior to the E11. The Nickel Silver key work is excellent throughout,
with no wear at all. The only reason I cannot describe it as "mint" is because the pads are not brand new,
they are all in very good condition, but not new. The stamps and wood are pristine.
The matching serial nos. are 340005. The m'piece is the original Buffet, virtually unused.
The case is an upgrade to a Yamaha custom, of pouchette French style.

LEBLANC SONATA Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£575 |
|
|
A near mint condition Leblanc Sonata Bb clarinet. The Sonata, along with the Esprit, was defined as Leblanc's
entry level professional clarinet. The Esprit was designed for a deeper, more resonant sound,
the Sonata for agility and ease of response.
Leblanc's stated aim was to make a clarinet with " a pristine, beautifully focused tone, out-standing
well-defined intonation, and extraordinary ease and efficiency of tone production". Certainly I feel this instrument is
a superb design; a great pity that Leblanc France no longer manufacture.
The clarinet is made from finest select African Grenadilla wood,
and features a polycylindrical bore design of 14.60mm, fractionally smaller than the Buffet R13.
All pads, are good, but not new, which is why I describe the instrument as near mint. The wood and Silver Plate key
work are pristine.
We have checked the instrument over thoroughly in the workshop
& regulated the key work as necessary.
The case is the original Leblanc in good condition, as is the mouthpiece.

BUFFET RC Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£1095 |
|
A very fine Buffet RC clarinet in Nickel plate.
When the American investor Martin Tolchin bought Buffet Crampon in the mid 1970's he felt that
though the R13 sold well in the USA, different models would be more successful in Europe.
The S1, Continentale and BC20, which became the RC, were all attempts to make darker,
more focused sounding clarinets. The RC did find much more favour in the UK, than the R13:
It had a more relaxed warm tone, which did attract many players.
This Bb has serial no. F219067 dating to 1981. Generally Buffet's from this period are considered the best
of their production. The Prestige range had not been introduced yet; which considerably downgraded the quality of
the standard, R13 and RC, and furthermore, Buffet considered the RC of this period their best model,
and charged more for it than the contemporary R13.
Boosey & Hawkes had also not yet taken over Buffet and forced a large increase in production.
The wood is excellent throughout with no cracks, damage or repairs.
There is a no wear to the Nickel Silver plating, which is in pristine order.
The key regulation is tight and there is no joint wobble.
The instrument has had a complete overhaul & re-pad in Pisoni Premium Deluxe fish skin pads
and is sold with a full years' Clarinets Direct warranty.
The m'piece is a used Vandoren B45 spot, in excellent condition.
The case is also in very good shape.

to the bottom right hand finger touch piece and left hand
thumb. The Alto has had a full repad and overhaul.&
is sold with a years' Clarinets Direct warranty. The serial
nos. are 9132. The case, in fair condition, it protects the instrument
well. The m'piece is a George Bundy No. 3 in good used

JACQUES ALBERT FILS DEGREZ SYSTEM Bb CLARINET-RESERVED |
£1695 |
|
A unique and exceptional "Degrez" system Boehm clarinet made by the last maker of the legendary Albert family, Jacques Fils.
So rare in fact, that even the Nicholas Shackleton collection does not possess an instrument of this type.
This instrument can be dated to 1937-39 with some certainty: Langwill gives the Degrez patent as 1936, and Jacques Fils ceased
making in 1939, dying in 1950.
The German Silver keywork is good, very solid, and with an excellent shine.
The wood is in amazing condition for its age, with no cracks or repairs,
only light surface marks. The instrument has been recently re-padded in Pisoni Premium Deluxe Tan Leather,
and the seal of the pads is excellent.
This clarinet is stamped "Made in Belgium". The makers stamp, " Syst. A Degrez Brevete, Jacques Albert Fils Bruxelles"
is clearly visible on all sections,
excepting the barrel which is a G Leblanc.
The bore of the barrel is an exact match to that of the clarinet at 14.9mm.
The intonation of this instrument is superb, with a third register which is uniquely secure and solid in response.
Once the LH index finger is off the ring, the Degrez "booster" register key opens, actuated from thumb C on upwards.
The instrument works well with B&H 926 bore m'pieces,
and I have supplied a good example recently relayed by Ramon Wodkowski.
The case is a Boosey and Hawkes in excellent condition.

hand tuning and undercutting to improve the response. Therefore the customer had an instrument which was almost
identical to an R13 on quality, but at less cost. There are no cracks or damage to the wood which is in excellent order throughout.
These days E13's are made from inferior quality wood which is stained to hide imperfections.
The case is the original in good condition, and the m'piece is a professional Vandoren B46.

specifically targeted at the UK market. Both intruments carry a UK stamp and, most unusually, both have unique custom Buffet Crampon bells
modelled after the English Boosey and Hawkes fashion. Perhaps Buffet felt that the English profesional player
would attract less flak if his bells fitted in with the rest of the section! Certainly it is hard to
remember now, how much resistance then the Buffet marque attracted from British professional players.
The RC did find much more favour in the UK, than the R13: It had a more relaxed warm tone, which did attract many UK players.
The Bb, serial no. 159802, is in very fine condition, there are no cracks or repairs.
There is very little wear to the plating and the key regulation is tight, there is no joint wobble.
Both instruments have had recent re-pads in fish skin pads.
The A has S/N 161498, which also dates to 1975, there is no damage to the wood, though the plate shows a
slight "cloudiness" but there is only a little wear. There are 4 barrles, of 60,61, 62 & 63mm respectively.
These instruments play with a dark, focused sound and excellent evenness and intonation,
they were manufactured as Buffet's top professional instruments with unstained Grenadilla wood, and sold for more than the R13.
Today one would have to spend over £5000 on RC Prestige instruments, and choose from a large number of examples, to get anything
of like quality.
The case is the original, in good condition. The mouthpiece is an original David Hite, in superb used condition..

BOOSEY & HAWKES 1010 Bb CLARINET, T. LAMB COLLECTION-SOLD |
£895 |
|
Clarinets Direct is fortunate to count many of the UK's finest players amongst our clientele.
One such is Tony Lamb: Principal Clarinet of English National Opera. From time to time Tony sells part of
his superb collection of 1010 instruments as he makes room for further acquistions; in the elusive search for the "perfect" 1010!
All of Tony's clarinets are carefully selected and often undergo further expensive after market improvements by Jon Steward of T. W. Howarth & Co.
Typically this involve correcting intonation faults and improving the evenness of the scale.
Thus when his instruments are offered back to the market
they are immeasurably improved on standard production line B&H 1010s.
Here we have a late 1960's pre-Acton Vent 1010 in superb condition.
The intonation is excellent, fit to be played in one of the world's finest orchestras.
The m'piece is a brand new Edward Pillinger custom 10EX model listing at £120.
All pads are Pisoni Premium Deluxe Tan Leather in as new condition.
The plating overall is excellent with only slight wear to the LH rings. There are NO cracks or damage to the wood,
excepting a tight hair line crack to the longer of the 2 supplied barrels. The thumb rest has been up-graded to a Leblanc adjustable model, and the old screw holes have been filled.

The bell of the Bb model "77" is made of ebonite, all other pieces are wood. The Edgeware A has an upgrade to an Imperial 926
barrel which improves both evenness and tuning. [The Imperial 926 was the top professional model with this type of bore]. In
addition, the mouthpiece is also a 926 No.2 which improves the response of the pair.
Both clarinets are padded in
tan leather and the pads and regulation are in excellent order.
The case is the original and has been relined. The current owner is prepared to split the pair as follows:
The Edgeware A in double case for £200. The 77 Bb in a modern Buffet single case at £145.

J R LAFLEUR, LONDON & PARIS, PROFESSIONAL Eb CLARINET-SOLD |
£595 |
|
|
This is an extremely rare Lafleur London & Paris Eb clarinet.
Just as early Boosey and Hawkes pre-war 1010's were stamped London and Paris,
I have seen professional Lafleur clarinets similarly stamped. I am not sure of the history of the Lafleur brand, but prior
to their amalgamation into the Boosey and Hawkes group, they did seem to manufacture fine instruments.
After their take over the Lafleur stamp seems to have been put on only poorer student models made by Boosey & Hawkes.
The wood condition overall is very fine, with only minor surface marks.
There are NO cracks or repairs. The Nickel silver plate shows some tarnish and wear, it is about 65%. Please see the photos
This Eb has just had a complete overhaul in double bladder fish skin pads and is sold with our 1 year warranty.
The m'piece is the original, on a Chedeville blank,
just relayed by Ramon Wodkowski to approximate Vandoren 5RV Lyre dimensions.
The case is the original, in good condition.

£695 |
|
|
An excellent condition
Conn Pan -American Clarinet in Cocobolo wood which is having
a full overhaul in Pisoni double bladder fishskin pads, and is sold
with a year's warranty. This instrument was an ingenious solution by
Conn to the scarcity of Grenadilla wood during the Second World War.
The same wood was used in the manufacture of WWII Bomber Propellers', hence the nick name; "Propeller wood
clarinet". This is a wide bore clarinet; primarily aimed at the
Jazz market, it plays with a warm and flexible sound. The main body of the wood is in fine shape for
it's age with no cracks or damage. The keywork will be buffed in the
workshop to a nice shine. The serial no. is
133076. The
m'piece is an acrylic original in good used condition. The case is

HOWARTH S1 A CLARINET-SOLD |
£1295 |
|
This is a near mint condition Howarth S1 A clarinet. This instrument was chosen new at Howarth & Co. in London
after an exhaustive search and play testing session by the current owner. He selected a Buffet R13 as his Bb
, but could find no finer A clarinet than this to match with it. The only reason I do not describe it as mint is that the pads
are not brand new. Shortly after selecting this pair, the original owner began to concentrate more and more on piano,
his first study instrument. Consequently his clarinets have sat unused and are now offered for sale through Clarinets Direct.
The unstained Grenadilla wood is in superb condition, with no scuffs or scratches, pristine.
There is no joint wobble. The pads are all sealing well,
and the instrument has had a thorough check over in our workshop prior to sale.
The key work shows absolutely no wear or play to the mechanism.
The Silver plating throughout is excellent. The matching serial nos. are 1319.
The supplied m'piece is the original Howarth, unused, and the tuning is excellent.
This A will pair well with any modern French bore clarinet,
The case is a modern leather Buffet in excellent used condition.

BOOSEY & HAWKES 1010 A CLARINET.T LAMB COLLECTION-SOLD |
£895 |
|
Clarinets Direct is fortunate to count many of the UK's finest players amongst our clientele.
One such is Tony Lamb: Principal Clarinet of English National Opera. From time to time Tony sells part of
his superb collection of 1010 instruments as he makes room for further acquistions;
in the elusive search for the "perfect" 1010!
All of Tony's clarinets are carefully selected and often undergo further expensive
after market improvements usually by Jon Steward of T. W. Howarth & Co.
Typically this involve correcting intonation faults and improving the evenness of the scale.
Thus when his instruments are offered back to the market
they are immeasurably improved on standard production line B&H 1010s.
Here we have a late 1960's pre-Acton Vent 1010 in superb condition, the original owner was Donald Watson,
and this clarinet was played for many years in the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Tony Lamb is the second owner.
All pads are fish skin in good condition.
The plating overall is excellent. There are NO cracks or damage to the wood,
the touch and tenon corks are also in good condition.
The m'piece is a B & H 1010 No.2.
The case is a single B&H but I can supply a good Orly double case if desired.
This instrument would pair well with No. 28 on the clarinets page.
This instrument compares extremely favourably with an Eaton Elite A, which currently costs over £3000.

BUFFET CONTINENTALE Eb CLARINET-SOLD |
£1495 |
|
|
This is an extremely rare single piece, Professional model Continentale Buffet Eb Clarinet.
When the American investor Martin Tolchin bought the Buffet Crampon company he felt that though
the R13 sold well in the USA different models would be more successful in Europe. The S1, Continentale and BC20,
were all attempts to make darker, more focused sounding clarinets. In the case of an Eb clarinet this goal
was even more appropriate! This Eb clarinet has significantly improved tuning and response over the more usual
R13 and RC Eb clarinets,
what a pity Buffet Crampon no longer manufacture this model.
The wood shows no cracks or damage, it is in very good order throughout. The Nickel Silver plate is fine throughout, with no wear
The S/N is 156334 which dates to 1975.
The instrument has just been fully overhauled in our workshop in Pisoni Premium Deluxe fish skin pads,
and is sold with our full years warranty. The m'piece is a Vandoren B40, in good condition.
The case is the original, which still latches well, though the handle is missing.

MATCHED PAIR OF EATON ELITE CLARINETS-SOLD |
£3795 |
|
|
This matched pair of Eaton Elites are a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. It was this pair that Colin Parr
used for the last decade of his tenure as Principal Clarinet of the CBSO. These instruments can
be heard on many of the finest Sir Simon Rattle CBSO EMI recordings which
are justly renowned; particularly the Mahler symphonies.
The Bb has serial no. E140 and has Silver plate in very good condition. The wood is in overall good condition,
though Colin tells me that there is a repaired,
pinned crack, just above the throat "A" hole running up into the makers stamp, [ see photo 5].
The crack occured very early on after the initial purchase and after that the repair was stable, with constant heavy use, for over 10 years.
The crack does not go through into the bore. All pads are Pisoni Tan Leather in good condition.
Both instruments have been down to our workshop for a thorough "check down"
with any regulation and touch cork work done as necessary.
The A, serial no. E175, has no cracks or repairs. The Silver plate throughout is in excellent shape,
as are all Pisoni Tan Leather pads and corks. There are 3 barrels of 63.0mm, [with a tight hairline crack]
and two of 64.5mm with no damage. The m'pieces are both in MINT condition: A Morgan RM06, re-bored to the correct dimensions
& a custom Pillinger S/N 1652, a copy of a pre-war 1010 model. The case and dust cover are used, but in good condition.

MATCHED PAIR OF BUFFET VINTAGE CLARINETS -SOLD |
£2495 |
|
An exceptionally rare and fine pair of Buffet clarinets. These instruments have a larger bore of 14.9mm,
and larger tone holes than the contemporary Buffet's. The result is a free and easy playing pair,
with excellent intonation, and none of the third register problems inherent in the polycylindrical design.
The drawbacks are flatter notes on low E and F, but to some extent this is corrected
by the fact that, at this period, Buffet reamed the neck of the bell, continuing the flare of the lower joint:
this does result in exceptionally even response across into the second register, a pity this is no longer standard practise.
The Bb has serial number 275E dating to 1890. There are no cracks or damage, in fact the condition is superb.
The German silver keywork is in pristine condition throughout.
The barrel is not original, it is a modern Buffet of 65mm. All other pieces are matching & original
with Buffet stamps. Note particularly the
" Brevette SGDG" which is on both top joints.
I cannot see a serial number on the A, but in every detail of stamps and keywork it is the twin of the Bb.
The barrel is a more modern Moennig Buffet of 67mm length.
There is no damage to the wood, which is crack and repair free, with the exception of an old repair to the bell,
see photo 8. The German Silver key work is excellent throughout.
All pads are new Pisoni Deluxe Tan Leather & both clarinets are sold with our full years warranty.
The case is an original Pouchette leather Buffet example from the 1960's in excellent used condition.
The m'piece is a brand new Edward Pilinger copy of an original Buffet m'piece with the importer's stamp
Carl Fischer. The lay has been accurately copied to 1.01mm by 17mm.

The wood is excellent throughout with no cracks, damage or repairs.
There is only very slight wear to the Nickel Silver plating, on the low F/C touchpiece, and RH rings.

BUFFET RC Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£1195 |
|
|
A very fine Buffet RC clarinet in Nickel plate.
When the American investor Martin Tolchin bought Buffet Crampon in the mid 1970's he felt that
though the R13 sold well in the USA, different models would be more successful in Europe.
The S1, Continentale and BC20, which became the RC, were all attempts to make darker,
more focused sounding clarinets. The RC, introduced in 1975, did find much more favour in the UK, than the R13:
It had a more relaxed warm tone, which attracted many players.
This Bb has serial no. F177049 dating to 1977.
The m'piece is a used Vandoren B45, in excellent condition.
The original case is also in very good shape.

BUFFET E11 EVETTE ETUDE Bb CLARINET-RESERVED |
£395 |
|
|
A very good condition Buffet Model E11, Evette Etude: The Etude is an E11 with the main body pieces made from Grenadilla wood,
whilst the barrel and bell are made from resin, with a wood effect.
This is partly to guard against splitting,
as the barrel tends to suffer most from the effect of the moisture in the players breath.
It is also to offset the weight of a completely wooden clarinet for the younger player.
The Nickel Silver key work is in good condition throughout,
with only slight wear to the LH rings, E/B, and F/C touchpieces [see photos 6 & 7].
This clarinet has had a complete overhaul in Pisoni Deluxe double bladder fish skin pads,
and is sold with our full 1 year warranty.
The matching serial nos. are 205291. The m'piece is an original Buffet, virtually unused.
The case is the original in good condition.

It
is a delight to be able to offer this incomparable pair of custom
made, Frank Hammerschmidt, Boehm system clarinets for sale. Bb &
A, bore size 15.00mm, silver plated keys, with offset C#'G# hole.
Adjusting screws for lower pad regulation.6 Barrels: 59.0mm, 60.2mm,
62.2mm, 63.0mm, 63.2mm, & 64.5mm.
4
mouthpieces: [All measurements in 100/mm:mm] 80/27; 88/23; 96/24 [
1010 curve] 90/24 [Viotto facing]. {For those unacquainted with
Viotto's work he is widely held to be the finest mouthpiece maker
for German style lays.} NB These m'pieces work with German style
reeds.
These
instruments were bought new in late 1999 for DM14,600. The condition
is pristine with just wear from careful normal use. A couple of
pads have been replaced with tan leather, the remainder, possibly
original, are white leather. I feel these clarinets would benefit
from some minor regulation and re pad work, but they play superbly
as is. The bore shine is immaculate as is the Silver plate. The
intonation and response are impeccable. There is no finer pair of
clarinets currently made.

MATCHED
PAIR, FULL BOEHM SINGLE PIECE BUFFET CLARINETS IN COCUS-SOLD |
£995 |
|
|
An
extremely rare & fine matched set of custom made early Buffet
clarinets in Cocus wood.
These instruments date from circa 1930, and are Full Boehm's in the
original case. All necessary pad replacement & tenon cork
repairs have been carried out at our workshops in order to put this
pair into good playing order.
NB These clarinets were photographed prior to going into the workshop.
Bb
Clarinet, S/N 6616/3969, has a bore of 14.85mm. The pads are a
mixture of white and tan leather. The former owner is a noted
collector of early instruments. There is an expert repair by Jon
Steward of T W Howarth & Co. to the top of the main body.
Originally the outside of the clarinet was chipped and a section of
wood has been replaced: The chip did not go through to the bore,
which is original. I have tried to photograph the repair, see photo
4, but the work is superb. There is also a small surface hairline
crack to the rear of the instrument underneath the thumb bush, again
the crack doesn't go through to the bore. The Maillechort key work
throughout is in fine order. The large bore m'piece tunes both
instruments well with the original 64mm barrels. If the purchaser
wishes to play with standard French bore m'pieces then longer
barrels of 66mm would be
advisable. A
Clarinet, S/N 6617/3697, has a bore of 14.80mm. An excellent instrument with
no cracks or damage: Again the pads are a mixture of tan, and white
leather, and though elderly, are sealing well. These, stained cocus wood
instruments, play with a delightfully sweet and vibrant tone. They
are perfectly playable as modern instruments at A=440 Hz, or they would
make a fine acquisition for a collector. The original leather case
has a temperamental central lock and outer latches therefore the
next owner will have to factor in the cost of a replacement case.
I do have another earlier Buffet triple case, for Bb, A and C clarinets, which
still latches well, though the interior is worn. I would be happy to substitute this case, if desired.

BUFFET E11 Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£475 |
|
A near mint condition Buffet E11 clarinet. The only reason I do not describe it as mint is a tiny chip
to the lower tenon of the upper joint, see photo 4.
This instrument is Buffet's semi-professional wooden model, and this example has matching serial nos. 507919.
The clarinet is not stamped "Made in Germany", therefore it is the most recent E11,
which is now made in an adjacent factory [ Ex-Leblanc] to Buffet Crampon's main site.
The Silver plated key work is pristine, with no wear.
This clarinet has just had a complete overhaul in Pisoni Premium Deluxe Double Bladder Fish Skin pads
and is sold with our full 1 Year Clarinets Direct warranty. The register key and C#/G# pads are in cork,
to compensate for any water tracking into these holes.

BUFFET R13 Eb CLARINET-SOLD |
£1495 |
|
This is an excellent condition single piece, Professional model Buffet R13 Eb Clarinet.
This clarinet is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct: It has been exceptionally well maintained by a careful
professional owner
and is offered to the market is superb condition.
Sadly the modern Buffet R13 Eb is now made in two pieces as a cost saving exercise, shorter wood billets are cheaper!
What a pity Buffet Crampon no longer make this model:
The nearest equivalent today would be the far more expensive Prestige.
When this instrument was made it was the finest professional model Buffet manufactured,
with unstained hand selected wood.
The wood shows no cracks or damage, it is in very good order throughout.
The Nickel Silver plate is fine throughout, with only slight wear to the rings.
The S/N is 160947 which dates to 1975, an excellent period of R13 craftsmanship.

an "Artist Quality" set up: Cork on the upper part and
fish skin pads on the lower. There are many supplied accessories:
A Vandoren 5RV m'piece, in "as new" condition, also a Pomerico Crystal "Beverelli Professional 8",
this has a tiny nick to the top tip rail, but plays perfectly.
A Vandoren Optimum ligature, with all 3 plates included. The original barrel, of 42.0mm,
has lost the upper tenon ring, & has a crack.
But a far superior "Guy Chadash Buffet" Eb barrel of 41.5mm is supplied: this barrel features a reverse
tapered bore to improve intonation throughout.
There could be no better endorsement in that Buffet Crampon manufacture these under licence from Chadash.
The case is a modern Buffet, in pristine condition, with both keys!

SELMER, PARIS, PROFESSIONAL ALTO CLARINET-RESERVED |
£995 |
|
This is a very good condition Selmer Alto Clarinet in Grenadilla wood, to low Eb.
The Nickel Silver keywork is good and shows only slight wear, the plating is about 95%.

The Alto has just had a complete overhaul with finest
Pisoni Premium Deluxe Tan leather pads throughout, and is sold with our full 1 year warranty.
The wood is in overall excellent condition with no cracks or repairs.
However it is likely that this instrument was previously owned by either a school or college:
Someone has etched an additional serial number, 12467, onto all the pieces, including crook and bell.
This has caused some surface marking to the upper joint.
In addition a metal bracket has been fitted to the two joints,
which, in effect, turns the alto into a single piece instrument.
This may well have been done to stop mis-assembly and damage.
Hence the one piece case; which is in very good condition.
This is a superb alto; Selmer is generally held to be the finest manufacturer in the world.
The matching Selmer serial nos. are V2161 which dates to 1967.

BUFFET MASTER MODEL ME13 Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£745 |
|
|
A very fine condition Buffet Master Model E13.
The Nickel Silver key work shows only slight wear, it is around 90%.
We have just re-padded in double bladder fishskin & the clarinet is sold with
our full year's Clarinets Direct warranty. The matching serial nos. are D21340 which dates to the early 1970's.
Back then the E13 range was tested at the Buffet factory, by Pierre Lefebvre, first clarinet of the Guarde Republicaine Band,
with the finest instruments then undergoing further
hand tuning and undercutting to improve the response. Therefore the customer had an instrument which was almost
identical to an R13 on quality, but at less cost. There are no cracks to the wood,
but there are a few minor scuffs and surface scratches.
These days E13's are made from inferior quality wood which is stained to hide imperfections,
whereas the wood for this clarinet is unstained.
The case is the original, which is worn but functional, and the m'piece is a Vandoren 5RV Profile 88 in ebonite.

BUFFET, EVETTE & SCHAEFFER, BASS CLARINET TO LOW Eb-SOLD |
£1095 |
|
|
This is an extremely interesting and rare Bass clarinet.
Evette and Schaeffer instruments were made as Buffet Crampon student models, yet this Bass has key work
and, more importantly, an acoustic design only found today on top professional Bass clarinets by Selmer and
Buffet. In other words: a double overblowing mechanism. This feature allows for 2 dedicated speaker holes for the upper register:
an initial hole which works from B up to D#,
then a second register key is activated by the E touchpiece for the remainder of the clarion register.
See photo 11. The ergonomics of the Bass are a little crude: Selmer did the design better, as does a later Prestige Buffet.
But nevertheless this Bass plays excellently with a strong tone across the registers. It also features a compensating G/D vent,
just like todays top instruments.
This Bass has had a complete Pisoni Premium Deluxe Tan Leather re-pad in our workshop,
& is sold with our full 1 year warranty.
All the German Silver key work has been buffed to a nice shine, and is in very good condition.
The wood overall shows surface marks and scratches,
in addition there are repaired cracks to the lower portion of the upper joint.
These are old stable repairs, which we have thoroughly checked in the workshop as part of the overhaul.
There are also dents to the crook and bell.
In short this instrument is in poor cosmetic condition; but plays superbly, with an excellent tone.
We have also fitted a floor peg attachment to the base of the bell.
The serial no. is K247, which probably dates to the early 1950's. The case is in fair condition.
The m'piece is an excellent Selmer C*.

the plating is pristine throughout.
The crook and bell are in good condition with only slight marks & scratches,
there are no dents or dings.
There are no cracks or damage to the wood, which is in good order throughout,
apart from a missing rear sling hook attachment.
This Bass has had a recent complete Pisoni Premium Deluxe Tan Leather re-pad with John Coppen,
& is sealing perfectly. The key regulation is good, there is no joint wobble.
There is a floor peg attachment to the base of the bell.

LEBLANC PARIS, PETE FOUNTAIN, Bb CLARINET, THE BIG EASY
-RESERVED |
£995 |
|
|
This is a Pete Fountain, Leblanc, Jazz clarinet: The "Big Easy".
Pete is probably the best-known clarinettist in popular music.
As the king of Dixieland he has lent his name
for over 30 years to the Leblanc France 1611 model, with a
15.00mm bore, that puts Pete's distinctive "fat" sound within the reach of other players!
Sadly Leblanc no longer manufacture: This example is probably the last chance to own a "new"
Big Easy.
This clarinet is as new, the condition is mint.
It was recently bought by a professional player who could not get on with the articulated C#/G# mechanism;
consequently the instrument is up again for sale. This model features 18 keys and 7 rings,
thus we have
forked Eb/Bb as well. It is a "top of the range" Leblanc, the specification includes:
Offset trill keys, balanced key action, separate post mounted, C#/G# keys and Ab/Eb keys.
Gold plated leaf and needle springs, tapered tone holes and a reverse cone upper joint,
Grenadilla wood body and Nickel Silver plated keys. There are two barrels of 64.5mm and 66mm.
As the name says: This instrument is a delight to play, superbly engineered, and excellently in tune.

KOHLERT/HACKER Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£895 |
|
|
This is a unique clarinet, extensively customised by Alan Hacker.
Originally the bell had a "Kohlert" stamp; in fact the instrument was made by Kohlert,
and the "Simun" stencil is of a German musical instrument dealer. The instrument's range was originally down
to low Eb. The clarinet has been shortened to low E, with the bell replaced with a " B&H Symphony 1010" example,
which has a hole through the bell and lowest tenon for tuning the lowest pitches, see photos 11 & 12.
The low "E" hole has itself been moved up the instrument, again for tuning purposes.
The key work is German Silver in very good condition. All pads, which are predominately white leather, are also good.
The clarinet features 7 rings, i.e. with a fork Eb/Bb.
The instrument is wide bore, and the supplied mouthpiece, a 1010 BM 2 works very well.
The response is free and even. The case is a modern "Rosetti" in excellent shape.

MARTEL FRERES a PARIS Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£995 |
|
|
This is the quintessential French clarinet; possibly the finest ever French makers were Martel Freres.
Each instrument was completely hand made and undercut, this last process alone took 2-3 days,
until a perfectly even scale was achieved.
Hawkes and Co. came to the surviving Martel brother after WW1 to help them design their own legendary Hawkes' Martels,
as played by Reginald Kell,
Charles Draper etc These evolved into the Boosey and Hawkes pre-war 1010
from which the genealogy of fine English wide bore instruments can be traced to the present day.
The playing characteristics are unique and exceptional:
Perfect uninhibited open response, and excellent tuning make for a true "players clarinet"
which is a physical delight to blow.
This example is stamped " Martel Freres a Paris"
and is in excellent condition with matching stamps on all pieces.
The barrel upper tenon has been relined in metal, see photo 3.
There is a minor chip to the bottom of the bell, just where it meets the ring, photo 4.
This aside, the wood is in superb condition for a vintage clarinet.
All Maillechort key work and springs are in excellent order.
The pads are tan leather throughout in very good condition.
There is no joint wobble. This is without a doubt the finest condition Martel I have seen.
The intonation is excellent, spot on A=440 with standard modern French bore m'pieces.
It is supplied in an excellent modern BAM case.

MATCHED PAIR OF LEBLANC LL CLARINETS -SOLD |
£1495 |
|
|
This matched pair of rare Leblanc LL clarinets are in excellent condition.
Leon Leblanc, along with Charles Houvenaghel, the great Belgian acoustician,
took the Leblanc manufacturing scientific principles even further.
They were the first major maker to set up an acoustic laboratory.
Leon was a gifted clarinetist who took the top prize at the Paris Conservatoire as a young man.
Although he could have had a great career as a performer,
Leon chose to stay with the family business and apply his musical insight to instrument manufacture.
He dedicated his life to bringing acoustical, mechanical,
and musical improvements to woodwind instruments.
Although Leblanc's instruments were almost entirely handmade,
Leon Leblanc insisted that the craftsmen follow careful measurements.
"Music is an art, but it is still governed by the laws of science,"
he declared (Music Trades, July 1996).
As a result, Leblanc instruments were more consistent than those that had come before.
The company continued to strive for consistent quality, ease of playability,
and mechanical innovation, throughout its history.
The LL model, named for Leon, was, some feel, the pinnacle of this achievement.
These are a one owner professional pair, and have been extremely well looked after.
The intonation and response is the equal of the most expensive French instruments sold today.
The Bb has matching serial nos. 41677 and has Nickel Silver plate in pristine condition.
The wood is in overall excellent condition,
with no cracks or repairs.
All pads are brand new Pisoni Premium Deluxe fishskin.
Both instruments have been completely re-conditioned by Clarinets Direct and are sold with our full 1 year warranty.
The A, serial nos. 39900, has no cracks or repairs. The Nickel Silver plate throughout is in good shape.
The m'piece is a Leblanc, in excellent condition.
The case is a Boosey and Hawkes of 1960's vintage in good condition.

SELMER, PARIS, BASSET HORN in F -SOLD |
£3495 |
|
|
This is a very good condition Selmer Basset Horn in Grenadilla wood, to low C.
The Selmer design of Basset Horn differs radically from that of Buffet and Leblanc
in that it is basically an extended Bb instrument. Thus it can be played with your usual Bb clarinet m'piece.
Buffet and Leblanc Basset Horn designs are essentially modified Alto clarinets.
This instrument is a one owner example and is in very good condition.
It goes without saying that Basset Horns do not get heavy use, and this example, amateur owned,
has been exceptionally well maintained.
The Nickel Silver keywork is good and shows only slight wear, the plating is about 95%.
There are two crooks both in excellent condition, one for use at A=440 the other A=442.
The bell shows no damage, only light surface marks.
The Bassset Horn has leather pads throughout in very good condition,
the key work is also well regulated, with no play or slackness in the mechanism:
This instrument will play perfectly out of the box.
The wood is in overall excellent condition with no cracks or repairs.
Selmer is generally held to be the finest manufacturer in the world of harmony clarinets,
and this instrument would retail today new for £9700.
The matching Selmer serial nos. are B1782 which dates to 1982,
when it was bought new from T W Howarth in London.
The m'piece is a Vandoren B45 Lyre in excellent condition.
The original Selmer case is also in good used condition.

MATCHED PAIR OF BUFFET VINTAGE CLARINETS |
£1995 |
|
An exceptionally rare pair of Buffet clarinets.
The Bb has serial number O463 dating to 1900. It is in very good condition, but with the following faults:
2 repaired, sealed cracks to the upper joint.
One running down through the first two trill key holes and the other crack at approximately 180 degrees to this,
but not running near any holes [see photos 2 & 3]. The original barrel has a sealed repaired crack and the original bell,
also has 2 repaired cracks. Despite these the instrument plays excellently.
The stamp reads "Buffet Brevette SGDG"
There are new tan leather pads throughout, all cork and touch corks are tight,
the key regulation is excellent and there is no joint wobble.
Please note the thread repair to the middle joint tenon.
The mouthpieces are Edward Pillinger copies of an original Buffet wood m'piece.
The first is relayed to 1.08 by 17mm, the second 1.05 by 17mm.
A, S/N 940C1, dates to 1906. Is is in excellent condition throughout, with no cracks or repairs to the wood.
Some of the key work on the lower joint has been replaced with more modern Buffet key work.
The correspondence arm is modern Buffet, also the lowest pillar has been replaced with a modern Buffet pillar of "anchored type".
The instrument is padded throughout in white leather pads, the finest Pisoni, in superb condition.
The bell on the A is stamped "Cundy Bettoney" an American importer's stamp. The top joint is also stamped LP.
The barrel is of more modern Buffet type re-bored to the correct dimensions for this type of early Buffet.
Both instruments play at A=440 Hz with the supplied barrels, of 66.3mm and 66mm.
The case is a modern Buffet, in good condition with keys.

Back then this was the finest professional instrument Buffet made, with unstained, matched wood.
This was before the introduction of the ""Prestige" range, which effectively downgraded the standard R13 considerably.
These days R13's are made from inferior quality wood which is stained to hide imperfections.
Buffet are currently attempting to recreate this Gold standard of manufacture in their current "Vintage R13" range
please go to www.buffetcrampon.com for more details.
The case is a B&H leather pouchette type, worn but fully functional and the m'piece is a the original Bufet C Crown

BUFFET
CRAMPON R13 Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£945 |
|
A
very fine condition vintage Buffet R13. The German Silver key
work is excellent throughout. There is one old repaired, pinned
crack to the upper joint above the A key hole, the crack does not go
through to the bore, so pinning would seem a bit excessive, but at
least one can be secure in the knowledge that the repair is
completely leak proof, see photo 5. We have entirely re-padded in
Pisoni Premium Deluxe Fish skin Pads. The clarinet is sold with our full
year's Clarinets Direct warranty. The matching serial nos.
are 49359 which dates to 1955. Back then this was the finest

MATCHED PAIR OF BUFFET VINTAGE CLARINETS -SOLD |
£2995 |
|
|
An exceptionally rare pair of superb condition early Buffet clarinets. These instruments have a larger bore of 14.9mm,
and larger tone holes than the contemporary Buffet's. The result is a free and easy playing pair,
with excellent intonation, and none of the third register problems inherent in the polycylindrical design.
The drawbacks are flatter notes on low E and F, but to some extent this is corrected
by the fact that, at this period, Buffet reamed the neck of the bell, continuing the flare of the lower joint:
this does result in exceptionally even response across into the second register,
a pity this is no longer standard practise.
The Bb has serial number 500L dating to 1898. It is in very good condition, and amazingly has no cracks.
The wood shows some surface scratches and marks, but for a clarinet of this age, it is in remarkable condition.
This pair have been photographed prior to going into our workshop. Therefore some protruding rods can be seen.
We will fully overhaul the pair in finest Pisoni Premium Deluxe Tan leather.
The excellent quality key work; mainly German Silver,
though some of the key barrels are actually solid silver, will be buffed and polished.
The stamps read "Buffet Brevette SGDG". All pieces are matching and original.
The key regulation is excellent and there is no joint wobble.
The mouthpiece is a brand new Edward Pillinger copy of an original Carl Fischer Buffet m'piece.
The original lay, accurately copied, is 0.98mm by 17.5mm.
A, S/N 84J, dates to 1896. Is is in excellent condition throughout, with no cracks or repairs to the wood,
the surface condition is superb.
The instrument has abviously had very little use. The keywork is also pristine.
The pitch is exactly A=440 Hz.
The case is the original Buffet, in good condition, and it still latches perfectly!

this makes Selmer's amongst the best tuned instruments on the market today.
The wood shows no cracks or damage, it is in perfect condition.
All Silver plate is excellent, as new.
The look and solid feel of this key work is far superior to contemporary Buffet manufacture.

ANONYMOUS PROFESSIONAL A CLARINET-SOLD |
£395 |
|
|
A superb condition Anonymous A clarinet.
It always comes a surprise that such a well made quality instrument could fail to be stamped.
In the 1920's and 1930's it was common practice for manufacturers to send out instruments for dealers to stamp
with their own brand name, the practice is sometimes referred to a "stencilling".
I have seen a Couesnon brochure of the period, the largest manufacturer of that time,
in which they advertise the fact that they can stamp whatever the trade customer would wish on a finished instrument.
I also have a copy of a letter E J Albert of Brussels sent to the French manufacturer Thibouville,
asking for 6 pairs of his best clarinets,
without stamp, and requesting the Albert design.
It is likely therefore that this instrument is of that type: Indeed it has the look of Thibouville manufacture.
The instrument has no cracks or damage to the wood, which is finest aged, unstained, Grenadilla.
The German Silver key work is also pristine throughout, and in perfect regulation.
The internal bore is large, at 15.00mm, similar to a pre-war B&H 1010.
This excellent clarinet has just had a full overhaul Tan Leather pad and is sold with our full 1 year warranty.
All touch and tenon corks are good. There is no joint wobble.
The m'piece is a Vandoren 5RV Lyre 1010 in very good condition.
The original double case, is lacking a handle, and worn, but it still latches and protects the instrument well.

There is no damage whatsoever to the wood, the condition is excellent.
The Silver plated key work is pristine, with no wear.

BUFFET MASTER MODEL, ME13, Bb CLARINET -SOLD |
£745 |
|
|
A very fine condition Buffet, Evette & Schaeffer, Master Model E13.
The German Silver key work shows is in excellent condition throughout.
We have just re-padded in double bladder fishskin & the clarinet is sold with
our full year's Clarinets Direct warranty. The matching serial nos. are K7199 which dates to the late 1950's.
The case is the original, which is worn but functional, and the m'piece is the original Buffet in ebonite.

G RUDOLF UEBEL FULL BOEHM Bb CLARINET-SOLD |
£545 |
|
A rare and fine G. Rudolf Uebel Full Boehm Bb clarinet to low Eb. This clarinet was probably made prior
to the 2nd WW as the rear of the clarinet is not stamped GDR, and the key work has not the utilitarian look of his later
instruments. This is a much more French influenced design; as can be seen by the use of two separate holes for the articulated C#/G# mechanism.
We have just completely repadded in pisoni Premium Deluxe double bladder fish skin pads. The instrument is sold with full 1 year warranty.
There are no repaired cracks or damage, apart from light surface scratches. The German Silver key work is in fine order throughout.
The barrel is an unusual design, with a tenon at the bottom. There are two barrels, the one which tunes best is shorter & made of ebonite and measures

K HAMMERSCHMIDT, KLINGSON, Bb CLARINET -SOLD |
£995 |
|
Karl Hammerschmidt is one of the iconic clarinet makers of the 20th Century.
Austria had perhaps no finer maker, and only the Wurlitzer clan of Germany can lay claim
to being comparable, or superior, depending on your preferrence for Viennese or German styles of playing.
These days, Karl's nephew, Frank, carries on the family tradition of hand crafted excellence in clarinet making.
This is a superb handmade clarinet in Grenadilla wood, stamped "Klingson".
If you are loooking for something approaching the "authentic Viennese sound",
given that this is a Boehm system clarinet,
then perhaps this is the clarinet for you.
This instrument is in good condition: NO cracks, marks or damage, fine key work throughout.
We have just completely overhauled in Pisoni finest Tan Leather pads.
This instrument is sold with our full 1 year warranty, and 3 month buy back scheme, unique to Clarinets Direct.

LOUIS A CLARINET-SOLD |
£895 |
|
This is an early English clarinet which is strongly associated with possibly the finest ever French makers:
Martel Freres.
Each Louis instrument was completely hand made and undercut in their Chelsea workshop.
The finishing alone took 2-3 days.
Charles Draper personally endorsed these makers, and the clarinet is stamped thus.
Perfect uninhibited open response, and excellent tuning make for a true "players clarinet"
which is a physical delight to blow, superior to much on the mass produced market today.
The clarinet is in excellent condition. We have just entirely re-padded the instrument in Pisoni Premium Deluxe Tan leather pads,
and the clarinet is sold with
our full 1 year warranty.
There is one sealed crack to the barrel and a tiny hair line stress crack to the receiver tenon of the bell.
This apart, the wood is in superb condition, with no scuffs are surface scratches.
There is no joint wobble. The key work shows absolutely no wear or play to the mechanism.
This clarinet has had hardly any use. The supplied m'piece is the original and the tuning is excellent.
With a bore of 14.8mm this A will pair well with any modern French bore clarinet,
and also work as a match with a Boosey and Hawkes 926 Imperial, a 926 m'piece also tunes the
Louis very well. The case is a modern B&H single A example in excellent used condition.

fish skin pads and the instrument is sold with our full 1 year warranty.
The key work overall is excellent, with little wear. The wood

In addition the barrel is not original, it is a Leblanc Normandy re-bored to the correct dimensions.

YAMAHA PROFESSIONAL A CLARINET, YCL65-SOLD |
£795 |
|
A superb condition Yamaha A clarinet,
which would pair well with any of the professional Bb's in the Buffet or Yamaha range.
It is received wisdom within the music industry that when Yamaha launch a new product,
they will have made every conceivable effort to outdo their competitors,
at a considerabily cheaper price to the customer.
So it was in the late 1970's and early 1980's, when Yamaha made their first serious foray into top
of the range professional clarinets. The wood was computer controlled, kiln dried, to assist in avoiding cracking,
the silver plate, and key work, was of considerably better quality than Buffet. The A clarinets had improved response and intonation
over Buffet as well. Many players found the ease with which these instruments responded completely won them over.
Eddie Daniels, the world's foremost jazz player was such a convert: Perhaps surprisingly he preferred and endorsed the YCL64/65 range
to the YCL84/85 which were Yamaha's most expensive Custom models.
Though the 64 and 65 were sold as professional clarinets, unlike the modern 650, which is a Buffet E13 rival.
The modern equivalent of the YCL64/65 is todays Yamaha CX or above.
The instrument has no cracks or damage to the wood, which is finest aged, unstained, Grenadilla.
The Silver plated key work is also pristine throughout, and in perfect regulation.
This excellent clarinet has just had a full overhaul and is sold with our 1 year warranty.
All touch and tenon corks are good. There is no joint wobble.

MATCHED PAIR OF BOOSEY & HAWKES CLINTON SYSTEM CLARINETS
-SOLD |
£995 |
|
|
An exceptionally rare pair of Clinton system, Barett action clarinets.
George Clinton`was responsible for improving the invention of Apollon Barret,
whereby the lowest trill key on the upper joint can produce both Eb/Bb and F/C,
depending on whether the first 2 fingers of the LH are used or just the LH index.
This system was extremely popular in the UK until the 1930's when the Boehm gradually won
over the majority of players. Essentially this is a much improved Simple system instrument.
The pair is very remarkable: The Bb S/N 15474 is stamped "EXCELSIOR SONOROUS CLASS" HAWKES & SONS MAKERS LONDON.
The A has S/N 13603 and is stamped "Made by Boosey & Hawkes Ltd LONDON".
Therefore we can with some degree of accuracy surmise that this pair was made in 1930,
the point that the Hawkes and Boosey companies joined together.
Both instruments are stamped LP i.e. A=440Hz. The original mouthpiece is wooden,
playable, but obviously worn. The instruments can also be played with modern m'pieces
with the barrels pulled out, but ideally need a copy made of the original
m'piece or B&H 926 type bore m'pieces. They are both in good condition, with no cracks or repairs to the wood.
Both clarinets have a wooden surround mount for the LH index finger. This is dual function:
1. To stop the index catching the pad cup below, and 2. to facilitate fingering the
A key.
It could be that this was a custom addition by their former owner.
Also both instruments have had the top 2 trill keys lengthened by approx 1 cm.
Additionally the A has had an extension to the 2nd trill key soldered on: I suspect the former owner had small hands.
See photo 10.
Though I am sure these instruments were bought as a matched pair there are some differences between the lower joints.
The A has a wooden surround mount for the RH index, and a metal bar to stop mis-assembly
and damage to the C#/G# key, when the joints are put together. The Bb doesnot, in fact it looks as if
the metal bar may have been there at some time in the past, but is no longer.
the pads throughout are a mixture of white and tan leather, sealing well.
The German Silver key work throughout is of excellent quality.
All pieces are matching and correctly serial numbered.
The case is custom made and in excellent condition.
It has a canvas cover, which is worn and with loose stitching but serviceable..

COUESNON, MONOPOLE, PROFESSIONAL Eb CLARINET-SOLD |
£595 |
|
This is an extremely rare Couesnon, Monopole, Eb clarinet.
Couesnon were at one time one of the largest instrument manufactures in the world.
They were rather like a French equivalent of Boosey & Hawkes,
in that their biggest customer was the French military. They were also well known for Brass instruments.
I believe they ceased manufacture in the 1960's. At their peak the Couesnon Monople was endorsed by the
eminent French clarinettist Auguste Perrier, and the Monopole Conservatoire model was considered
one of the finest French clarinets in the inter-war years.
The wood condition overall is very fine, with only minor surface marks.
There are NO cracks or repairs. The German silver key work is in excellent condition.
This Eb has just had a complete overhaul in double bladder fish skin pads and is sold with our 1 year warranty.
The m'piece is the original, on a Chedeville blank,
and plays with good intonation at A=440Hz.
The case is the original, in poor condition, it will serve for shipping only.
The new owner will have to factor in the cost of a replacement case.
