PETER EATON ELITE Bb CLARINET-SOLD

£2500

This Eaton Elite Bb clarinet is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct, and has an impressive provenance: The instrument was made for Ian Herbert, ex-Principal Clarinet of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as a back up for an earlier pair of Eatons. As a spare it has seen very little use and has been extremely well maintained. The Elite is a wide bore instrument, but unlike the B&H 1010 clarinet it is based on it features a reverse cone to the bore of the upper joint for improved intonation.
The Bb has serial no. E512 and has Silver plate in excellent condition. The wood throughout is in fine condition, with no cracks or repairs. All pads are Tan leather, in very good condition. The m'piece is a Peter Eaton stamped 1.22 21R, with S/N 4284. This instrument demonstrates an exceptionally even and well tuned scale. The case is a Howarth of modern light weight type, in good condition.

BUFFET R13 A CLARINET-SOLD

£1395

A good condition Buffet R13 A, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. The matching serial nos. are 254774 which dates to 1984, an excellent period of manufacture. And, importantly, this was prior to Buffet's late 1990 design repositioning the speaker tube higher, an adjustment which many players feel detracted noticeably from the R13's response, flexibilty, and projection. The pads are mainly John Coppen superpads, with the exception of low F# and E which are tan leather, all pads are in excellent condition and sealing well. The Nickel Silver plated key work shows only slight wear, mainly to the ring fingers. There are 2 barrels, the original Buffet of 65.5mm, and another barrel in resin of 61.0mm. The original Buffet double case shows some scuffs to the exterior, and wear to the interior, but it is fully serviceable.

PAIR OF PRE-WAR, LONDON & PARIS, BOOSEY & HAWKES 1010 CLARINETS-SOLD

£1495

This pair of extremely rare Boosey & Hawkes, London & Paris, clarinets are in very good condition. Their last former owner is a London based professional, and these instruments have been extremely carefully owned. The London & Paris 1010 model, as the name suggests, was made for B&H in France. These instruments are in very good original condition, with matching serial nos. throughout on the A, with the Bb having had a custom adapted barrel by Peter Eaton, and a more recent 1010 bell.
The Bb has main pieces with matching serial nos. 2043 and has keywork which has been re-plated in Silver. The key work does show some wear but the re-plating has made the rings and keys feel smooth to the touch. The instrument is in Grenadilla wood throughout, which is in overall excellent condition. All pads are Pisoni Tan Leather in good condition.
The A, has matching serial nos. 1203. The key work, which is German Silver is in good shape for its age, with no wear. Like the Bb it has Pisoni Tan Leather pads in good condition. The main pieces are all in wood apart from the original barrel, which is in ebonite. The m'piece is a Peter Eaton Elite, stamped 1.26 21.5 B in very good condition, and tunes both clarinets well, as does the custom adapted Eaton barrel. The case is a Leblanc in excellent condition, with dust cover and music pouch.

BUFFET E13, EVETTE & SCHAEFFER, Bb CLARINET-SOLD

£945

An extremely fine, and rare "UK" stamp Evette & Schaeffer, E13 clarinet in Nickel Silver plate. The matching serial numbers are K38782 which dates to 1976, making this one of those manufactured when Buffet were marketing and selling out of their own London premises in Pages Walk, Lambeth. The "UK" stamp was to reassure British buyers that these instruments were made at A=440 Hz. This E&S Bb is much superior, in every respect; quality of wood, intonation, plating, and tone, to contemporary mass produced E13 Buffet clarinets. When this model was produced it was second only to the RC and R13 profesional models in quality, and it was manufactured alongside them at the Buffet factory. This model was made from unstained wood, and hand finished, the new asking price then was 76% of the cost of a new R13. It is interesting to note the Buffet tacitly admit the current fall in quality: the contemporary asking price for an E13 is only 59% that of a new R13.
There is no damage to the wood, which is crack and repair free. The plating overall is pristine.  The instrument has just had a complete re-pad in Pisoni deluxe fish skin pads in our workshop and is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The case is the original which shows some stains to the interior, but is in good used condition. Current E13s are being treated by Buffet with a chemical compound, which is supposed to inhibit cracking. In fact this seems to be causing some joint problems for Buffet, with many new instrument owners reporting problems with sticking joints to dealers, due to this compound leaching out from the wood end grain. At the period this instruments was made, thankfully the Grenadilla wood was left to age naturally prior to manufacture. The m'piece is an up-grade to a brand new ebonite Leblanc L4.

SELMER BUNDY CONTRA-ALTO CLARINET-SOLD

£1345

This is a very good condition Selmer Bundy Contra-Alto Clarinet in Resonite to low Eb, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. There are no cracks or damage to the body; minor surface scratches and marks only. The crook and the bell have only a few light scratches, with no dents or repairs. Though the Nickel Silver plating shows some "cloudiness" there is only slight wear to some of the ring finger touchpieces the plating is around 95%. The instrument plays well, and the pads which are tan leather are all sealing. The key work is well regulated and the serial nos. are 298. The used case protects the instrument well, and the interior shows some tears to the lining. The exterior had originally 3 latches, of which 1 has failed, the remaining 2 latch securely. The m'piece is a used Selmer Bundy 3 in good condition. There is also a Vandoren No. 2 reed.

MATCHED PAIR OF BUFFET RC PRESTIGE CLARINETS-SOLD

£4395

A near mint condition pair of Buffet RC Prestige clarinets. These instruments are part of a number of clarinets that Joe Pacewicz is selling off as he leaves the RSNO. Joe is fastidious in his choice, and care, of his clarinets. These particular clarinets were hand selected by him new at the Buffet factory. The Presige range features hand selected unstained wood, and a LH Ab/Eb lever.

The Bb, matching serial nos. 636525, has original white leather pads as fitted by Buffet, though not new, they are all sealing well and in good condition. The wood is without mark or blemish: NO damage or cracks whatsoever. The Silver plating is also in excellent order throughout. This type of clarinet was the first Buffet design to feature a voicing groove in the bell to improve the lowest pitches. The intonation and response are outstanding. The A has matching serial nos. 631957, and like the Bb has Buffet white leather pads in excellent used condition. All pieces are matching and original and correctly stamped. The supplied double case is of modern light weight design in good used condition.

BUFFET E11 C CLARINET-SOLD

£995

An excellent condition Buffet E11 C clarinet, in Grenadilla wood. This clarinet has just been through our workshop for a re-pad, in fish skin pads, and is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The supplied m'piece is an up-grade to a Vandoren B45, which is in extremely good used condition. Current Buffet E13's and E11's are giving a lot of trouble with shrinkage and wood movement, this basically started when Buffet moved the manufacture of these models from Germany back to France. Fortunately this instrument pre-dates this; it was made in Germany.

BUFFET CRAMPON E13 Bb CLARINET-SOLD

£895

An excellent condition E13 clarinet in Silver plate. The E13 is Buffet Crampon's top selling student model. based opn the professional R13 clarinet. The case is the original which is in good condition. The m'piece is a stock Buffet 120G. Current E13s are being treated by Buffet with a chemical compound, which is supposed to inhibit cracking. In fact this seems to be causing some joint problems for Buffet, with many new instrument owners reporting problems with sticking joints to dealers, due to this compound leaching out from the wood end grain. At the period this instrument was made, thankfully the Grenadilla wood was left to age naturally prior to manufacture.

PAIR OF YAMAHA, CSGH III CUSTOM, CLARINETS-SOLD

£4245

A mint condition pair of Yamaha CSGH CUSTOM III clarinets, which are a commission sale. Clarinets Direct is fortunate to count a great many of the UK's top professional clarinettists as our customers: One such is Joe Pacewicz, for many years a member of the RSNO. This instrument is part of a number of clarinets that Joe Pacewicz is selling off as he leaves the RSNO. Joe is fastidious in his choice, and care, of his clarinets. Yamaha made great claims for the CSG range; a new bore design is supposed to provide great tonal richness, as found in older instruments made from properly aged Grenadilla. Certainly the final incarnation of the CSG, the CSG III, has been a great success with many players.
The instruments are pristine, "as new", with perfect condition "Hamilton" key work. The wood is finest unstained Grenadilla, in mint condition, no cracks or damage. The Bb has matching serial nos. 01017. The bore design features a reverse taper to the barrel. Unlike Buffet polycylindrical bore designs, the instrument features a taper also at the top of the upper joint. The bore at the middle of the instrument, however, is similar to the Buffet Bb R13/RC. Consequently the intonation and evenness of this instrument do feel like an improvement over Buffet standard designs. The pads are finest white leather, in "as new" condition. The clarinet comes with 2 original barrels, a standard of 56mm and a short of 55mm. The A has matching serial nos. 01002. Like the Bb this A is a standard Boehm system but with a LH Ab/Eb lever. Again the pads are white leather, in "as new" condition with lower trill keys and register key in cork. The clarinet comes with 2 original barrels, a standard of 56mm and a short of 54mm. Again, in common with Buffet pairs, the A is of slightly larger bore than the Bb. The Yamaha double case and part leather cover are also in very good condition.

YAMAHA, CSGH II CUSTOM, PAIR OF CLARINETS-SOLD

£3295

THE A IS "SOLD". THE Bb IS "RESERVED" HAVING BEEN FOR SALE IN SINGLE CASE FOR £1550. A pristine condition pair of Yamaha CSG CUSTOM II clarinets, which are a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. These instruments are part of a number of clarinets that Joe Pacewicz is selling off as he leaves the RSNO. Joe is fastidious in his choice, and care, of his clarinets. These instruments are late CSG II Customs with the Hamilton plating and raised tone hole for LH3, which were features of the later CSG III. Yamaha made great claims for the CSG range; a new bore design is supposed to provide great tonal richness, as found in older instruments made from properly aged Grenadilla. Certainly the design has found much favour with many fine players, including Michael Collins, Nicholas Carpenter and Nicholas Cox.
The Bb clarinet, matching serial nos. 03045 has wood which is finest unstained Grenadilla, without cracks, damage or blemish of any kind. The instrument has the original "reflector" Yamaha pads and some on the upper joint in cork. The A has matching serial nos. are 02391. Like the Bb the pads condition is excellent, with mostly the original Yamaha pads and a couple on the upper joint in cork. Two further, shorter, original barrels are included in the sale, which are not pictured. The Yamaha double case is also in excellent condition & comes with the keys. This pair represents superb value for money, with a refined tone and superb intonation.

MATCHED PAIR OF BUFFET CRAMPON R13 CLARINETS-SOLD

£2895

BOTH Bb & A ARE "RESERVED". An extremely fine pair of Buffet R13 clarinets in Silver plate, which are a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. These one owner instruments have been extremely well cared for and maintained. Their current owner, a UK based professional, has just purchased a new pair of Buffet clarinets.

All pieces are matching and original and stamped "Buffet", and a new Green line 66mm buffet Barrel is also included. The Silver plating shows some wear, commensurate with use, mainly to the ring finger touchpieces, and the bottom RH "pinky" keys. The Grenadilla wood is in good condition throughout, though there is a small chip to the outer rim of the top tenon of the Bb, see photo 4. This is cosmetic only, and has no effect on the response. The instrument has been recently re-padded in "superpads" and tan leather pads and is in fine regulation. The A S/N 246904 is also in very good condition. It has fish skin pads throughout, which whilst used, are in good condition. The plating shows hardly any wear. SCHMIDT MANNHEIM, SCHMIDT REFORM BOEHM Eb CLARINET-SOLD

£2395

An ultra rare Eb clarinet stamped "Schmidt Mannheim", which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct, having come to us through a Dutch professional clarinettist. This is a unique instrument of experimental Schmidt Reform Boehm type. It lacks a dual function register key and separate dedicated throat Bb vent, which are common to most SRB instruments. Unusually it has a low A/E vent instead of a low G/D compensating vent. So for these reasons it is perhaps best described as an experimental Schmidt Reform Boehm Eb. This clarinet is unique in that it is stamped "Schmidt": Usually Schmidt, the player's name, was stamped alongside the name of the maker, as in Schmidt Kolbe. Schmidt Kolbe Schmidt Reform Boehm instruments were played by the legendary British player, Bernard Walton. The excellence of his playing can be heard in the Philharmonia recordings of the 1950's and 1960's. It is possible that this instrument was in fact made by Hammerschmidt, the style and type of key work may support this theory.
The instrument features the following Schmidt Reform Boehm improvements: Vent for D/A, low A/E vent, and a full time hole in the bell to raise bell E/B. There are no cracks or damage to the Grenadilla wood, though it shows surface marks and scuffs. It is possible that this instrument dates to the 1st decade of the 20th Century i.e. it is over 100 years old. The thumb rest has had minor damage in the past, see photo 10. The pads, whilst not all new, are in good condition, the instrument has been down to our workshop for a partial re-pad and full regulation. The intonation and scale are amazing, this Eb actually approaches a Bb clarinet for quality of sound. The clarinet plays well with the supplied new Leitner & Kraus m'piece. NB it plays with German Eb clarinet reeds. The original m'piece is included though it shows much wear, as it may be of use to the next owner should they wish to have it copied. The case, which I believe to be original, still latches and protects the Eb well.

The serial number is E073, which makes this an early example. However its owner has not played it much. There are 2 barrels of 68.0mm, and 68.5mm. The m'piece is a Vandoren B40 which has been bored out to 1010 bore, in good used condition, as is the original case.

BUFFET CRAMPON C12 Bb CLARINET-SOLD

£995

A very good condition Buffet C12 Conservatoire Bb clarinet, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. This instrument was originally manufactured as Buffet's entry level professional wooden model, and though there has been some confusion from Buffet, as marketing men at Buffet felt that this model represented too good value for money, it sits well above the E13 in terms of quality. These days the Buffet website describes the instrument as suitable for the young advancing professsional, about to enter Music Conservatoire.
The Nickel Silver plated key work is in fine condition with no plating wear. We have just completely repadded in Pisoni Premium Deluxe fish skin pads & the clarinet is sold with our "Clarinets Direct" 1 year warranty. SELMER, PARIS, EEb CONTRA-ALTO CLARINET-SOLD

£4000

This is an excellent condition Selmer Contra-Alto clarinet in Rosewood, which has been owned by a British collector, who had a large collection of Contra-Bass clarinets. Unfortunately his redundancy forces this sale. The Selmer Contra-Alto is generally considered the finest in the world, due to its excellent response and fine ergonomics. It plays almost as easily as a Bass clarinet.
This instrument is in pristine condition, without cracks or damage to the wood. The pads are all tan leather and in very fine condition. The Nickel silver plating is also excellent throughout, with no wear. The matching serial nos. are A6821 which dates to the early 1980's. The supplied m'piece is a Selmer C*, which is again in very good condition. The original case shows some exterior scuffs, but the interior is excellent.

BUFFET E11 Bb CLARINET-SOLD

£595

A near mint condition Buffet E11 clarinet, in Grenadilla wood, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. The only reason the instrumnet is not described as mint, is that the tenon corks are not all brand new, in all other repects this instrument is " as new". In fact, because new tan leather pads have been fitted throughout, it is actually supplied in better specification than new. The Silver plating is pristine, as is the wood condition. All pieces are matching and original, the m'piece is brand new and unplayed. This instrument is Buffet's semi-professional model, and this example has matching serial nos. 835321. In recent years the Buffet badged "France" Bb clarinet E11 model, which was made in the old Leblanc factory, gained an extremely poor reputation for build quality. So much so, that Buffet have deleted this model from their line up and, confusingly, renamed it the E12. Fortunately this E11 was made in Germany, before the move to manufacture in the French Leblanc factory and is, therefore, a significantly better made instrument.

BUFFET CRAMPON GREENLINE FESTIVAL Bb CLARINET-RESERVED

£1995

This Buffet Festival Bb clarinet is in excellent condition, with only slight wear to the stamps and tenon corks to distinguish it from new. This instrument is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. The Festival is based firmly on the R13 Prestige, with the register key tube slightly higher, and adjustments to the upper and lower bore flares to compensate. This type of alteration had in fact been suggested to Buffet in the late 1960's by Moennig, Morgan, and Gigliotti: The result is improved intonation and evenness to the second and third registers, which has meant the Festival is a firm favourite amongst professional players.
The Bb has matching serial nos. 507382. The body is made of Greenline composite, which resists cracking and warping. This has made the instrument a favourite of the Ministry of Defence for marching band use, and also of players who may have to work in extremes of humidity and temperature. The Silver plate shows no wear, it is pristine. The clarinet has just been completely overhauled at a cost of nearly £200. The invoice is included in the sale, and the clarinet is sold with a full 1 year warranty from the date of purchase. The m'piece is a Vandoren B40, in good used condition, as is the Buffet case.

LINTON, ELKHART, BASS CLARINET TO LOW Eb-SOLD

£845

This is an unusual Linton Bass Clarinet in ebonite to low Eb, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. This model has the low Eb key mounted on the bell, and features, an articulated C#/G, LH Ab/EB lever and a compensating low G/D vent. Normally one would associate all of these features with a Bass clarinet aimed more at the professional end of the market. It could be that this instrument was made as an entry level professional model, in either the late 1930's or, more possibly post WW2, when there were problems in the USA obtaining wood for instrument making. There are no cracks or damage to the body, which shows surface marks and scratches commensurate with much use. The crook & bell are both in similar condition, there are a number of "dings" to the crook, as well as, many surface scratches to the bell. There is a floor spike attachment to the bell. The German Silver key work is in good condition. The Bass has Pisoni Premium Deluxe tan leather pads thoughout in excellent condition, the current owner has had a minor service done on the Bass, with pads replaced as necessary, prior to sale. The serial nos. are 1555. The case is used, but again in good condition. The supplied m'piece is a Selmer Bundy in very good condition. Despite the Bass clarinets cosmetic appearance it plays easily and would be a good option for a professional player on a budget.

LOUIS, LONDON, Bb CLARINET-SOLD

£995

This an exceptionally rare and fine Louis early English clarinet. The firm was strongly associated with possibly the finest ever French makers: Martel Freres. Each Louis instrument was completely hand made and undercut in their London premises, 2 Burnsall Street, Chelsea W3. The finishing alone took 2-3 days. This clarinets only former owner was a London professional who owned this instrument and a later set of Leblanc LL's which he used for the duration of his career. Charles Draper personally endorsed these makers. The perfect uninhibited open response, and excellent tuning make for a true "players clarinet" which is a physical delight to blow, superior to much on the mass produced market today.
The instruments is in very fine condition, for a clarinet made in the 1920's. Clarinets Direct have just entirely re-padded it in Pisoni Premium Deluxe Fish Skin pads, and the clarinet is sold with our full 1 year warranty. There is a small crack to the top of the lower joint of this Bb, which runs from the tenon ring down to the first tone hole, see photo 7. The crack is a surface crack only, and has no effect whatsoever on the response. This apart, the wood is in very good condition, with only scuffs and marks associated with careful professional use. There is no joint wobble. The German Silver key work shows absolutely no wear or play to the mechanism. The wood is Grenadilla, apart from the bell which is in Cocus wood. This was a popular choice of wood with superior class instruments of the period, I believe that the finest craftsman thought that a Cocus wood bell would give extra vibrancy and resonance to the bell notes. Certainly when one changes register on these clarinets the timbre of the bell "B" is much more lively and this results in an even scale across the break. This clarinet features an ebonite "bushed" C/G hole, see photo 10. The reasons for this could be: 1. The hole may have been moved at the request of the original owner, also the thumb rest has been repositioned slightly lower, and the the wood surface filled with shellac, see photo 9. 2. The clarinet may originally have been made with 7 rings and the owner requested the tone hole chimney be remade, in the standard fashion. 3. As undercutting this tone hole can be extremely difficult, and indeed, the D/A twelfth is often very poor on modern clarinets, perhaps ebonite inserts were made so that the undercutting could be done to the most exacting standards, and then fitted to the clarinet. Certainly the scale, intonation, and response of these clarinets, is the equal, or superior to, the most expensive clarinets made today. The supplied m'piece is a Morgan RM06. This Bb features a bore of 14.65mm, which is similar to most modern French bore clarinets and therefore it will work well with any modern French bore mouthpiece. A box of original, used Louis reeds is also included. The case is a brand new Carmichael with pouches and carry strap.

L'ORPHEON, PARIS, PLATEAU B FLAT CLARINET -SOLD

£695

A rare, metal L'Orpheon, Paris, Plateau B flat clarinet. This is most probably an instrument made for the military for out door use, with a covered hole mechanism, i.e. plateau. The entire instrument is plated in Silver, which is in overall very good condition, what slight wear there is, is primarily to the ring finger touchpieces. The clarinet has just been overhauled by Clarinets Direct in fish skin pads, and is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The matching serial nos. are 2733. The clarinet has a sling hook fitted just above the rear thumb rest. The case is of modern gig bag type with over the shoulder carry strap, and pouches. The mouthpiece is a used Selmer Paris C* in good condition. This clarinet would suit a younger player, doubler or even the arthritic player who may have difficulty covering the standard open-tone-hole.

GEORGES LEBLANC, PARIS, Bb CLARINET-SOLD

£795

An exceptionally rare and fine professional Leblanc Bb Clarinet with 7 rings, automatic dual function Bb hole and speaker tube, and low G/D compensating vent. This instrument is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct, the current owner is an British collector.
This Bb has matching serial numbers C 5102, which probably dates to the 1950's. This was the time at which Selmer were also marketing the Centered Tone Omega Bb, wich had a similar mechanism, allowing dedicated tone holes for overblowing and throat Bb. The wood is in excellent condition with no cracks and repairs. The German Silver key work is also in very good condition. All pads are fish skin, in fair condition, with the exception of the register key pads which are in cork. This clarinet demonstrates an even and well tuned scale. It competes easily with much more expensive new instruments on the market today. The mouthpiece is a Buffet "C" in ebonite. The case is elderly but still fully functional.

BUFFET CRAMPON E13 Bb CLARINET-RESERVED

£895

An excellent condition E13 clarinet in Silver plate, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. The matching serial numbers are K133312, which dates to the mid 2000's, and all pieces are original with Buffet stamps. There is no damage to the wood, which is crack and repair free. The Silver plating is pristine, "as new". The instrument has just had a complete re-pad in Pisoni deluxe fish skin pads, and is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The invoice is included in the sale. The case is the original which is in good condition. The m'piece is an up-grade to a new Vandoren 5RV Lyre, which, as this costs £95.00, ia a substantial improvement over the normal Buffet stock m'piece.
