A very fine Buffet R13 Bb, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. This instrument has been most recently owned by a young musician, who having studied at the Guildhall Scool of Music has just entered the Royal College of Music. It was with this clarinet that she successfully passed her Diploma and auditioned for the London Conservatoires. The matching serial nos. are 59253 which dates to 1959. This period is commonly referred to as the "Golden Era" of R13 manufacture. Back then this was the finest professional instrument Buffet made, with unstained, matched wood. This was before the introduction of the ""Prestige" range, which effectively downgraded the standard R13 considerably. These days R13's are made from inferior quality wood, which is stained to hide imperfections. Buffet are currently attempting to recreate this Gold standard of manufacture in their current "Vintage R13" range, please go to for more details. Certainly this instrument will not disappoint; the quality of scale and intonation are everything one has come to expect from this period of careful hand manufacture.
The super pads are all sealing well, and they are in excellent condition. I understand from the seller that this instrument was fully overhauled by Eddie Ashton in 2013, the pads should be good for another 7 years or so. The wood shows a surface crack to the upper joint, which has been glued in the past; the repair is old and stable, see photo 6. It has given the last owner of this instrumnent no trouble whatsoever, throughout the last 6 years of heavy use. In addition the instrument as been down to our workshop for a thorough check down, and minor regulation. The German Silver key work shows no wear, only a "patina" commensurate with its age. The Buffet back pack case in black shows some scuffs to the exterior, and wear to the interior, but it is fully serviceable. The m'piece is an "as new" stock Buffet.
