This is a Noblet Artist C Clarinet, made by Leblanc, in very good condition. Clarinets Direct is fortunate in counting leading professionals amongst our clientele. This instrument has a unique and excellent Provenance, having been owned and customised by the late John McCaw. John was a leading exponent of the "English" school of clarinet playing, notable for his exceptional tone, and expression. He started his long career as Principal Clarinet of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. He joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra and became their Principal Clarinet, before leaving to join the New Philharmonia [later the Philharmonia] as Principal Clarinet, a post he retired from in 1989. As those fortunate enough to study with him well remember, John was always concerned that a clarinet be tuned as accurately as possible. Though this instrument started life as a professional Artist model C Noblet clarinet, in fact it has been much altered: Most of the tone holes have been further undercut, particularly on the lower joint. John has made a custom barrel, bored out and re-layed a Vandoren 5RV m'piece, as well as adapting a further Buffet barrel in addition to the original Noblet barrel. A tuning ring has been added to the original barrel,as well as to the middle joint, which is why, in the photos, the instrument appears not to be fully assembled. In addition John also reamed a tuning hole in the bell, but subsequently this has been filled in with blue tack. This instrument features on many Philharmonia recordings, but it can be heard to excellent effect in the Mozartiana Suite Cadenza by Tchaikovsky, which John recorded in the late 1980's. The matching serial nos. are 37571, the wood has no cracks or repairs, it is in good condition throughout. The Nickel plate is in very good condition, with no discernable wear. The instrument has just had an overhaul in our workshop in double bladder fish skin pads, and is sold with our full warranty. The bore, in common with all other Leblanc made C clarinets, is 14.50mm. The instrument tunes exceptionally well, and also demontrates a much more even and homogenous tone than the standard production model. It would suit a professional player.
