A
fine pair of
Buffet S1 clarinets in Silver plate. When the
American investor Martin Tolchin bought Buffet Crampon in the mid
1970's he felt that though the R13 sold well in the USA different
models would be more successful in Europe. The S1, Continentale and
BC20, which became the RC, were all attempts to make darker, more focused
sounding clarinets. In the case of the S1 this is partly achieved by
much less undercutting.
This Bb has serial no. 204296, which dates to 1980, an exceptionally fine period of manufacture at Buffet Crampon.
There is virtually no wear to the plating, which is excellent throughout,
and the key
regulation is tight, there is no joint wobble. There is no damage to the wood, which is in fine order.
These clarinets have had only one professional owner, and have been very well cared for,
in fact for its age, the condition of the pair is
exceptionally fine. The instruments have both just been fully overhauled
in Pisoni Premium Deluxe double bladder fish skin pads and are sold with our 1 year warranty and buy back scheme.
The A, S/N 142977 dates to 1973. Like the Bb the plating is excellent throughout, as is the Grenadilla wood.
Though the A is older, it has, as usual, seen less use.
The pair have been well cared for.
The
S1 clarinet plays with a robust, focused sound and excellent evenness
and intonation. In the past players such as John McCaw and Mitchell
Lurie played S1's.The m'piece is a brand new student model. The case is an original
Buffet, in good used conditiopn: There are some slight stains to the interior,
the exterior is good, the keys are also provided.
