This is a superb condition boxwood and ivory Eb Piccolo Clarinet, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. An 8 key clarinet had been invented as early as 1791 by Hoth of Berlin, but it is likely that this instrument is much later, even as late as early Victorian, however the condition makes this hard to believe. The "New Langwell Index" makes mention of a "London" maker active in the latter half of the 18th Century.
The wood condition overall is perfect, there are NO cracks or repairs. The stamps are as new. The pads, which are white leather on felt, are not new, but are all sealing well. This instrument was restored by one of the UK's leading repairers with over fifty years experience. The Brass keys show some discolouration, but function as they should. There is no joint wobble. The instrument has the original Grenadilla wood mouthpiece which takes cut down modern Eb reeds. The pitch is slightly higher than A=440, about A=442, but with the barrel pulled the Eb can be played comfortably at A=440. There supplied case is in good condition, and latches well.
