A very good condition early boxwood C clarinet, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. I am extremely grateful to Thomas Carroll, a period clarinet player visiting from the USA, for his assistance with the description below. This clarinet is of fine Swiss manufacture, probably made around 1820. It is stamped, on all pieces excepting the mouthpiece, "Bieber C Stuslingen". Originally it would have played about A=415, but subsequently a rather crude attempt was made, at the top of the upper joint, to shorten it; the file marks can be seen, photo 4. However this attempt was abondoned and it still at approximately that pitch, with a modern Eb clarinet m'piece. Apart from the afore mentioned damage the clarinet is in excellent condition. The instrument has been re-stored and re-padded, it plays very well. There are 5 brass keys, and the clarinet is made of boxwood. It appears to be in the style of a Grenser instrument. The supplied case is worn but functional.
